Late Bottled Vintage, or LBV, is the most popular premium Port style in both England and Canada, representing one in five purchases of Port in the UK and over a quarter of all Port enjoyed by Canadians.

Vintage Port and LBV both present a selection of very fine full bodied red ports from a single year. The fundamental difference between the two styles lies in the way each is matured. Vintage Port is kept in wood for only twenty months or so before being transferred to the bottle where it will continue to age.

Late Bottled Vintage, as the name suggests, is bottled later, remaining in wood between four and six years. During this relatively long period of wood ageing, an LBV matures and settles down -  it is ready to drink when bottled, does not need to be decanted and can be served by the glass for several weeks after the cork is drawn.

LBV was developed as a high quality but more affordable and immediately drinkable alternative to Vintage port to be enjoyed by the glass on everyday occasions. It was originally created in 1970 by Taylor’s current Chairman, Alistair Robertson.

Although many other houses now offer this wonderful style of wine, Taylor’s LBV - the original Late Bottled Vintage - remains the benchmark in the category; the first choice of the knowledgeable Port drinker.

Taylor's is renowned as one of the most innovative Port houses, having pioneered the Late Bottled Vintage style, and also holds one of the largest reserves of cask-aged wines used to create their range of tawny Ports. Taylor's Vintage Ports are the cornerstone of the company's success and the main source of its unique and inimitable house style. Taylor's benefits from extensive ownership of grade A vineyard sites throughout the Douro, including Quinta de Vargellas, one of the… Read more

Robert Parker (RP) : 88 Points (2014)
The 2014 Late Bottled Vintage Port is a typical Douro blend bottled in 2018 with a bar-top cork, 101 grams of residual sugar and 20% alcohol. Deeper than its sibling (the Fonseca LBV this issue) on opening, this still lacks that wine's personality, enticing aromatics and more intense flavors. This did seem more powerful and brooding, the structure more impressive than its fruit. It also seemed brighter and livelier, however. The next day, things changed. This no longer seemed any deeper than the Fonseca, which fleshed out and then showed even more power. Plus, the Fonseca seemed more tightly wound. They both retain plenty of power for LBVs, though. The flavor profiles remain a bit different, obviously. In a tough Douro year, this is a good performance, but the fruit is not overly expressive. Give the edge this year to the Fonseca. This is, of course, ready to drink now and needs no particular development time.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2013)
Plush and warm in feel, with melted black licorice, fruitcake and ganache notes holding sway over the fleshy core of plum and blackberry confiture flavors. A singed alder hint through the finish gives this a pleasant hint of rusticity. Best from 2019 through 2025.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2011)
Taylor introduced the filtered, stopper-corked style of LBV in the 1950s, offering a top-quality wine that’s ready to pour on release and stays fresher after opening than a Vintage Port. This may be the best wine they’ve produced in the style. It carries some of Taylor’s signature tannic structure, a note of austere mineral power to underline the bold fruit richness. That fruit comes in octaves of cherry flavor, floral cassis notes and scents of raspberry cordial. Expressive and delicious.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2010)
This is a beautifully perfumed wine, with just the right dense texture of tannins and depth. A balance of fruit, tannins and acidity make this quite attractive. Drink now for immediate pleasure or wait until 2017 for a more mature character.

Intense amber tawny colour. Opulent and voluptuous nose of complex spicy, jammy and nutty aromas, hints of orange flower and a fine oakiness coming from the long period of aging in cask. The palate is full of very rich and concentrated flavour and has a long mellow finish.
