Very pale straw color. Gorgeous nose of white peach, lime, minerals and jasmine. Then fresh and crisp, but with an underlying glyceral note that provides backbone to the zingy citrus and pomaceous orchard fruit flavors. Finishes extremely long with strong notes of fresh ginger and an underpinning of mineral dust. An outstanding Etna Bianco.

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2020)
Clear and bright aromas of sliced pear, melon, apple and honeysuckle. Full-bodied, layered and creamy with density and richness, yet it remains agile. Some cooked lemon and bitter lemon at the end. Honeysuckle and sage, too. From carricante vines that are about 100 years old.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Etna Bianco Archineri (with 7,000 bottles produced) is a pure expression of Carricante from pre-phylloxera vines. The wine is made in stainless steel and you get a very pure and precise taste of the grape as a result. This was a great growing season on Etna, resulting in nicely concentrated and shapely fruit, so that simple wine making approach is well matched to the elegance of vintage material on hand. Peach, honey and crushed stone rise to the forefront of the bouquet.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2019)
Spanish broom, green melon and honey aromas lead the nose. Made with grapes from extremely old vines, the palate features ripe pear, lemon drop candy and tangy saline before a white almond close. (KO) (11/2020)

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2018)
Splendid wine, produced from pre-phylloxera vines at 850m on Etna’s eastern slopes. Lively lime nose, the attack fresh and intense. Ripe citrus flavours dominate; very concentrated, mineral and imposing.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2017)
In 2005, Michele Faro established Pietradolce near Castiglione di Sicilia on Mount Etna’s northern slope. He and his team farm 27 acres of native Etna varieties, including a plot of ungrafted, alberello-trained carricante at 2,788 feet up Etna’s eastern slope. Winemaker Carlo Ferrini soft-presses the grapes and vinifies the wine in stainless steel, spotlighting carricante’s zesty lemon flavors and saline minerality. Tensile acidity keeps the wine tightly wound; it will benefit from another year in bottle, but there’s plenty of potential here.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2015)
Intense, complex citrus-fruit nose. Intense and long and finely textured. Moreish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2014)
Bright straw-yellow. Initially mute nose opens with aeration to offer bright floral and saline aromas. At once rich and fresh, with citrus and wet stone flavors displaying crystalline purity and terrific persistence. Great stuff! Made from 100-to-120-year-old pre-phylloxera Carricante vines grown roughly 850 meters above sea level on the eastern slopes of Etna. -- Ian D'Agata

Wine Spectator (WS) : 89 Points (2013)
A sleek, light- to medium-bodied white, with stone and smoke accents underscoring the notes of persimmon, salted almond and paraffin. Well-cut and minerally on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 500 cases made.

Tasting Note: Vibrant Sicilian white wine from volcanic soil, rounded, fruity and perfumed with yellow plums, white stone fruit and herbs.

Food Matching: A white wine for all seasons. Good as an aperitif, but excellent with starters based on fish and pasta.

Vinification: The grapes are picked into crates and are at once refrigerated at 8°C. After light crushing and destemming they are soft pressed. The decanted must is racked and inoculated with yeasts then ferments at 15°C for 20 days. The wine thus obtained remains on the lees until February with continuous mixing. 10% of the must is fermented in barriques. The wine is then matured in stainless steel tanks and Allier oak 225 litre barriques.
