Region and Vineyards

The Pierro vineyards are situated in the renowned Willyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. This area is celebrated for its exceptional terroir, benefiting from a maritime climate that is ideal for growing premium Bordeaux varietals. The vineyards are located on north-facing slopes, which receive ample sunlight, contributing to the ripening of the grapes. The rocky soils and the close proximity to the Indian Ocean provide a unique microclimate that enhances the complexity and intensity of the fruit.

The vines at Pierro are over 30 years old and are meticulously managed to ensure low yields and high quality. The canopy management practices ensure that the grapes develop with optimal sun exposure and airflow, resulting in concentrated flavors and balanced acidity. The unique high-density narrow rows further contribute to the richness and complexity of the wines produced from these vineyards.

Winemaking

Thi vintage of the Pierro Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (86%), complemented by Merlot (7%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and a touch of Malbec (1%). The grapes were handpicked during the late March to early April harvest period, ensuring only the finest fruit was selected.

Post-harvest, the grapes underwent a rigorous hand-sorting process to remove any imperfect berries. Fermentation took place in open fermenters, with the must being plunged by hand three times daily. This traditional method enhances the extraction of color, flavor, and tannins. A portion of the wine was left to macerate for an extended period of 30-40 days, which further added to the structure and complexity of the final blend.

Following fermentation, 70% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months. This careful oak aging imparted additional layers of flavor and helped to soften the wine’s tannins, resulting in a well-integrated and harmonious wine.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Medium-depth ruby with a faint purple hue.
  • Aroma: An inviting bouquet of mellow red and blue fruits, intertwined with aromas of cedar, tobacco, and mossy undergrowth.
  • Palate: The palate is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of blackberry, mulberry, blackcurrant, and plum. Subtle hints of spice add complexity, while the fine, supple tannins provide structure and length. The wine is balanced with a delicious fruit sweetness, leading to a long, satisfying finish.

Wine Pairing Ideas

The Pierro Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as grilled Margaret River beef, cooked over coals. The robust flavors of the wine complement the rich, smoky notes of the beef, while the fine tannins cut through the meat's fat, enhancing the overall dining experience.

For a vegetarian option, consider pairing this wine with a wild mushroom risotto. The earthiness of the mushrooms mirrors the wine's mossy undergrowth aromas, and the creamy texture of the risotto complements the wine's rich, full-bodied palate.

History of Pierro Estate

Pierro was founded by Dr. Mike Peterkin in 1979, a visionary who combined his medical background with a passion for winemaking. Peterkin was one of the early pioneers in Margaret River, a region that has since become one of Australia’s premier wine-producing areas. With a commitment to excellence and innovation, Peterkin planted the vineyard on the rolling hills of the Willyabrup Valley, utilizing high-density planting and advanced viticultural techniques to ensure low yields and high-quality fruit.

Dr. Peterkin’s dedication to producing world-class wines led him to study under some of the great winemakers of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Alsace, bringing those influences back to Pierro. Over the years, Pierro has gained a reputation for its meticulous approach to winemaking, from hand-picking and sorting grapes to using a combination of traditional and modern techniques in the cellar. The estate remains family-owned, with a focus on producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Margaret River.

Region and Vineyards

Pierro is located in the Willyabrup Valley within the Margaret River region, which is celebrated for its Mediterranean climate, cooling sea breezes, and gravelly loam soils. The region’s ideal conditions for viticulture include long, warm days and cool nights, which help to preserve acidity and build complexity in the grapes. Pierro’s vineyards are densely planted, ensuring competition among vines that results in lower yields and more concentrated flavors.

The estate spans 40 hectares, with vines that are predominantly over 30 years old. The vineyard’s close proximity to the Indian Ocean provides a maritime influence that moderates temperature and extends the growing season, allowing for a slow and even ripening of the fruit. The meticulous care in the vineyard, including organic and sustainable practices, ensures that only the highest quality grapes are harvested.

Wine Range

Pierro produces a range of wines that showcase the diversity and quality of the Margaret River terroir. The flagship wine is the Pierro Chardonnay, renowned for its balance, complexity, and elegance. It is often considered one of Australia’s best Chardonnays, combining fruit purity with subtle oak influence and a long, mineral finish.

The estate also produces exceptional Bordeaux-style blends, such as the Pierro Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and the LTCf (Little Touch of Cabernet Franc). These wines are characterized by their aromatic complexity, structured tannins, and the ability to age gracefully.

Pierro also offers a delightful Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend, known for its freshness and vibrant acidity, making it a favorite among white wine enthusiasts.

Did you know?

Pierro's founder, Dr. Mike Peterkin, was instrumental in developing the "SBS" blend (Semillon Sauvignon Blanc) in Margaret River, a style that has become one of the region’s signatures. His innovative approach and commitment to quality have left a lasting impact on the Australian wine industry.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve leads with a charry, dark, resinous nose, which belies what I know will be delicate and detailed fruit beneath; there always is. Delicacy, that is one of the calling cards of the Pierro reds, in my mind. With boysenberry, bay leaf, sweet pea, cassis, strawberry, roast beef crust and violets, there's an array of flavors that may not seem cohesive in a list, but the wine pulls together nicely in the mouth. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (in the majority), Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Matured in new French oak. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
