Bin 311 Chardonnay is sourced from a single cool-climate region and each year the fruit selection is made to reflect the Bin 311 style. In 2013, fruit sourcing has come from Tumbarumba – one of Australia’s most exciting cool-climate, high altitude viticultural districts. Penfolds has worked with Chardonnay from Tumbarumba since the early 1990s. The Bin 311 style typically exhibits a mineral acid backbone, complemented by barrel fermentation and maturation in seasoned oak. Minimal filtration is employed, preserving elegant fruit flavours.

Colour:  Pale white gold

Nose: Wonderful purity – white peach, loquat and lemon blossom florals hovering over wet stone minerality with a complexing nutty/nougat semblance.

Palate: Again – Purity! Lemon/lime juice and nuances of grapefruit atop a defined citrus-like acid nucleus! Structural and textural, closing with lemon pith phenolics providing great mouthfeel and length of flavour.

Beguiling and elegant!

James Halliday (JH) : 94 Points (2020)
68/25/6% Tasmania/ Piccadilly/Henty fruit. Matured 8 months in 41% new French oak barriques. There is an immediacy and an amicable approachability to this vintage, thanks to mid-palate presence, intricately uniting the white peach, lemon and fig of impeccably ripe fruit with the cashew nut of French oak and the subtle struck-flint reductive allure that signs Penfolds chardonnay. Fine-boned structure characterises a long finish, defined by a glorious sweep of brilliantly illuminated, crystalline acidity that spells out medium-term promise. A great 311.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2020)
Has a very well-made feel with vibrant chardonnay fruit – lemon, peach and nectarine – as well as nicely placed barrel-fermentation complexity. Quite zesty and linear palate with flavors that run from citrus to peach and melon, and there’s good purity throughout. Sourced from Tasmania, Adelaide Hills and Henty.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2020)
Quite smoky and toasty, but also richly fruited and citrusy, the 2020 Bin 311 Chardonnay is a lovely example of Australian Chardonnay. Aged eight months in 41% new French oak, this blend from Tasmania (68%), Piccadilly (25%) and Henty (7%) is bold and flavorful, medium-bodied, with a ripe, custardy feel and lingering, citrusy-crisp finish. It's the best value of these three Penfolds Chardonnays, loaded with pineapple and citrus notes and bursting with flavor for a price that's competitive with comparable wines out of California.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2020)
Deep, complex and elegant, with a powerful core of poached pear, dried apricot and marmalade, details of toasted hazelnut and green cardamom, and a touch of sea salt on the mouthwatering finish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2019)
Translucent gold. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of pear, melon and Meyer lemon, along with a deeper buttered toast quality. Juicy and seamless on the palate, displaying fine definition to its fleshy citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Picks up smoky lees and honey nuances with air, which carry through a long, subtly chewy finish that echoes the mineral and citrus fruit notes. (JR) (7/2020)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2019)
This is a likable, multi-regional Chardonnay blend that is at first tightly reined and straightforward in nature, but reveals more layers as it opens in the glass. It weaves stone fruit, pineapple, salted nuts and toasty characters into a slippery, creamy mouthfeel. The oak is present but not overwhelming and an appealing salted peach note lingers on the finish. It's a solid example of modern Aussie Chardonnay. (CP) (3/2021)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2019)
Aged for eight months in French oak (35% new). 100% malolactic conversion. Lemon zest, cream, oatmeal with sharp acidity. Very saline and savoury in style. Minimal oak, with sea-shell complexity on the finish. Great fruit intensity, yet the ripeness profile remains pleasingly restrained. 17.5+/20 points (RH) (9/2020)

An enticing combination of pink grapefruit, burnt orange and white nectarine interwoven with aromas of smoked almonds, hazelnut, and freshly cut hay. The savoury notes carries through onto the rich, textural palate, evidence of this wine’s low-intervention winemaking. An intricate bone-dry style that is highly concentrated with a distinct flintiness, tight structure and crisp, citrus finish.
