This wine is a homage to the monks of the courageous carthusian order, who arrived in 'Priorat', in 1095, where they cultivated vines. In 1835 a violent crowd destroyed the work of a lifetime and sacked the monastery, events which later culminated in the auctioning of church lands known as the "Desamortización de Mendizábal".

In 1996 the Torres Family began work on the planting of vineyards on the slopes strewn with the hard, black slate-like "Licorella" stone.

Dark in hue and almost opaque, it is fragrant and mineral on the nose while on the palate it is luxurious and oily, but also silky and with a long finish.

This darkly coloured wine is reminiscent of jam and liquorish, over a smooth spicy and toasted background, which comes from the french oak barrels.

The Torres family has been making wine in the ancient Catalán town of Vilafranca del Penedès, South-West of Barcelona, since the 19th Century. Its renowned tradition of combining innovation, dynamism and a commitment to high quality has put Torres firmly on the world map. Torres remains independent and family-owned, run by fourth and fifth generation members of the Torres family and is presided over by Miguel A. Torres Riera. Miguel A. Torres Riera has been described as "one… Read more

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2017)
A beautiful red with rather flamboyant fruit, showing crushed berries, flowers and some chocolate and walnut undertones. It’s full-bodied and layered. Creamy texture. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2017)
A ripe red from Priorat, the 2017 Salmos is a blend of 50% Cariñena, 40% Garnacha and 10% Syrah with a mixture of berry and spicy oak aromas and limited Priorat character. It's polished and balanced, and the tannins are fine-grained.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2016)
Earthy and mineral notes frame a core of plum and wild herb flavors in this thick red. Firm tannins and balsamic acidity support the dense texture. Subtle, savory and intense. Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2030.

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2016)
Decadent interplay of sumptuous warm fruits, cedar and vanilla. Oaky and ripe. Very well defined, not aiming for complexity.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2015)
Tarry black fruit aromas include notes of grilled beef, licorice and peppery spice. A flush palate is smooth and friendly, with moderate acidity creating balance and layering. Flavors of blackberry and cassis include chocolaty oak, while this deals a lot of vanilla and mocha on the finish; enjoy through 2022.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2014)
The toasted-coconut notes of wood sweeten this wine’s scents of blackberry jam. The fruit is ripe and abundant, soft and generous, deep in its flavors. It needs time in the bottle for everything to find its right place.

This is a serious wine, characterized by its balance of richness and fresh acidity–and a wonderful example of Godello’s potential when placed in the right hands. Structured and precise, it displays a distinctive minerality that tells of its mountainous origins.
