More information on wine critics and ratings

This is the great wine of the Castello, from the vineyard Mormoreto planted in 1976. The first vintage was from the 1983 harvest, and since then has been produced only in the most favorable years. It was not produced from the harvests of 1984, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1998 or 2002.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, planted 150 years ago, have, over time, formed an intimate bond with this terroir and now bring out all of its unique qualities. It is a wine of great depth, opulent and refined, that you can cellar for many years.

Tasting Notes:

Mormoreto appears a near-opaque ruby, then opens to a fruit-rich nose laden with sweet dark cherry and raspberry, followed by fragrant impressions of Avola almond and mint, and with a tasty edge of sea-salt; elegantly threaded into this aromatic complex are notes of truffles, black liquorice, and ginger, crowned with darker nuances of chocolate and tar.

The mouth boasts an ultra-dense mouthfeel and velvety texture, with a majestic suite of tannins that receive superb support from a full-bodied, spacious structure.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2014)
Delicious aromas of strawberries, red cherries and sweet plums as well hints of vanilla follow through to a rich and polished palate with a fine line of acidity, velvety tannins and a round but uplifted finish with plenty of almond aftertaste. So succulent. Drink now and enjoy.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2014)
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Sangiovese and 5% Petit Verdot, this has aromas of cassis, roasted coffee bean, vanilla and cedar. The dense polished palate offers dark chocolate, dried blackberry, candied fig and raw almond alongside fine-grained tannins. Enjoy through 2023.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2013)
This wine follows its own distinct philosophy that marries it into the school of super Tuscan wines, and not the Chianti Rufina appellation where it is born. The 2013 Mormoreto is a bend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that seems intent on escaping from its small town roots. It shows much bigger aspirations. This is a thick and succulent red wine with dark plum, blackberry, chocolate and exotic spice. The mouthfeel is lasting and powerful.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 88 Points (2013)
Offering a deep, fruity nose of black cherry and blackberry notes framed by oak spice accents, this crisp, vibrant red is rich and ripe, delivering bright acidity and fine tannins for support, with resinous oak adding a lingering layer of tannins to the blackberry fruit flavors. Tails off on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 300 cases imported.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2011)
Bright dark ruby. Blackberry jam, cassis, candied violet, minerals, lavender and aromatic spices on the serious, perfumed nose. Bright and dense in the mouth, with aromatic herb nuances lifting the blackcurrant and blackberry syrup flavors. Finishes pure and very long; while this wine offers plenty of early appeal, it should age effortlessly for another six to eight years. This is one of Italy’s most underrated Super-Tuscans made with international varieties.
