Concentrated, perfumed and youthful, the nose exhibits fresh pears and white nectarines with an underlying floral lift of lemon blossom.

Subtle notes of pistachio, cinnamon quill, blanched almonds and rice wafer lie beneath.

Powerful, yet very fine, the palate has tension with a thread of minerality. Limes, pear skin and lemon sorbet lead to a finely textured mid-palate, with layering and subtle oak integration.

The purity and clarity of the fruit is the feature throughout.

2017 was another cool year, as was 2019. This 2017 Art Series Chardonnay has that pure saline thread of acidity that laces through it. It is savory and briney with pink grapefruit acidity and a rumbling depth of baritone fruit power. The shape of the wine in the mouth is taut, tense and precise, before opening out through the finish in a plume of pillowed flavor. An exceptional wine that harnesses the exactitude of the cool year and expresses the tremendous power possible in the vineyard sites.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2017)
Shimmering straw-yellow. Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of white peach, pear, honeydew melon and Meyer lemon, along with a bright floral overtone. Juicy and densely packed, conveying a suave blend of richness and vivacity to the mineral-drenched citrus and orchard fruit and floral flavors. Takes on smoky lees, sweet butter and iodine notes with air and shows superb clarity on the strikingly long finish, which echoes the mineral and floral notes.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2017)
Such complexity and resolve make for a very attractive nose with peaches, grapefruit, cedary oak spice, gunflint and wet stones. The palate has a plush, smoothly resolved texture with a rich, creamy texture and all-encompassing, ripe stone-fruit flavors, ahead of a very long, smooth finish. Grilled-hazelnut and apricot-kernel flavors to close. Great to drink now, but certainly a decade of cellaring in the tank, too.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 96 Points (2017)
Opens rich and lush, with grilled pineapple, ripe pear and fleshy apricot flavors. Details of mineral, lime skin and Meyer lemon add a fresh thread of acidity and a sense of precision, finishing with a note of sesame seed.

James Halliday (JH) : 99 Points (2016)
The perfumed perfection of the bouquet and the wonders of the palate, with its ever-shifting mosaic of white stone fruit, rock melon, grapefruit, Granny Smith apple and custard apple reign supreme. Oak? Yes, it's there, although subtle. Acidity? Yes, the giver of life now and into the future. (JH) (8/2020)

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 98 Points (2016)
Very light colour for its age and the bouquet is likewise fresh and young and unevolved. There are subtle grapefruit, spice and nougat aromas and the oak is taking a back-seat. The wine is still tight and reserved, and really needs to be cellared. It's concentrated and will reveal much more if given time. It has outstanding length and finesse. Great potential. (HH) (5/2019)

Decanter (DCT) : 97 Points (2016)
2016 was an outstanding year, with an early, fine summer with daily sea breezes. Slightly above-average January and February temperatures were offset by a welcome 90mm of January rain. Markedly floral, there's a white blossom character to both nose and back-palate. It's a concentrated wine with gently granular fresh and dried pear notes, accompanied by silkier white peach. Succulent, ripe lemony acidity is well integrated and gently sheathed by nougat-inflected creamy lees. Lovely lithe mouthfeel and beautiful harmony.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2016)
This vintage of Leeuwin’s most famous wine boasts the textural prowess and tightrope walk of approachability and ageability that put it on the map, but it’s currently showing quite a lot of grainy oak and firmly pressed fruit, particularly as it warms in glass. A mélange of concentrated melon and pineapple fruit swirls with butterscotch toast and slightly nutty, salty seashell aromas and flavors. Nevertheless, the Leeuwin signature is still there and this should continue to age until 2030.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2016)
Art Series Chardonnay has a proven track record, proprietor Denis Horgan having long ago set his sights on a long-aging style. The key is old-vine fruit from a 1975 planting at the family’s Stevens Road estate. Tim Lorett gave the juice a little skin contact and let it settle for three days before fermenting it in new French oak barrels, where it later aged, with lees stirring, for 11 months. The warm vintage made for an expansive wine, even as the fruit retains fresh meadow-flower scents, zesty lemon notes and peachy clarity. The oak plays a prominent role, adding scents of caramel and rounding the creamy texture, while the fruit persists with elegance.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2013)
Tasted Nov 2017 - Warmer-than-average summer. Cool, destemmed fruit with some skin contact. The juice was settled for three days then racked into 100% new oak barrels for partial wild-yeast fermentation, lees stirring and 11 months' barrel maturation. Tasted blind. Some savoury oak on the nose. And then sweet fruit on the front palate makes me think it is Australian, not burgundy. Or maybe Dom Drouhin, with the oak selected as in Burgundy but the fruit grown in Oregon? Lovely transparent texture. Very delicate.
