Region and Vineyards

La Spinetta Barbaresco Bordini hails from the prestigious Barbaresco DOCG in Piedmont, Italy, specifically from the municipality of Neive, located at an altitude of 240 meters above sea level. The vineyards cover an area of 11 acres with a south-east exposure, ideal for capturing the morning sunlight that promotes the slow and even ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes. The soil is predominantly calcareous marl, characterized by light-colored sand, which contributes to the wine's mineral complexity and refined structure.

Barbaresco, along with its more famous sibling Barolo, is renowned for producing some of Italy's finest Nebbiolo wines. The slightly lower altitude and proximity to the River Tanaro provide a unique microclimate that allows for earlier ripening and a subtly different profile compared to Barolo, often resulting in wines that are slightly more approachable in their youth but still capable of significant aging.

Winemaking

This vintage of La Spinetta Barbaresco Bordini is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The winemaking process begins with maceration and alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats for approximately 15 days. Following this, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in used French oak barrels, which softens the wine's acidity and adds a layer of complexity. The wine is then aged for 18 months in these barrels, followed by an additional 8 months of bottle aging before release, ensuring a harmonious integration of flavors and tannins.

The meticulous winemaking process at La Spinetta emphasizes both tradition and precision, aiming to highlight the pure expression of the Nebbiolo grape while allowing the unique characteristics of the Bordini vineyard to shine through.

History of La Spinetta Estate

La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by Giuseppe (Pin) Rivetti in Castagnole delle Lanze, Piedmont. Initially focusing on Moscato d'Asti, the estate rapidly expanded its horizons. In 1989, the Rivetti family introduced their first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian, followed by a Barbaresco in 1995, which significantly boosted their reputation.

Today, the estate is managed by Giuseppe's sons, Giorgio, Bruno, and Carlo Rivetti, who continue to innovate while respecting traditional winemaking practices. The Rivetti family's dedication to quality and their pioneering spirit have established La Spinetta as a symbol of excellence in the wine world.

Region and Vineyards

La Spinetta's vineyards are primarily located in Piedmont, a region celebrated for its noble grape varieties and prestigious wines. The estate boasts over 165 hectares of vineyards spread across different appellations. The vineyards in Castagnole delle Lanze are particularly noted for their Barbera and Moscato wines, while the vineyards in Neive, Barbaresco, and Grinzane Cavour are famed for their Nebbiolo grapes, the cornerstone of their celebrated Barbaresco and Barolo wines.

The estate's vineyards benefit from a unique terroir characterized by limestone and clay soils, providing an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality grapes. The meticulous vineyard management practices, including sustainable farming and low yields, ensure that the grapes reach optimal ripeness and express the distinct characteristics of their terroir.

Wine Range

La Spinetta produces a diverse range of wines, including Barbaresco, Barolo, Barbera, and Moscato d'Asti. Their Barbaresco and Barolo wines are highly acclaimed for their complexity, elegance, and aging potential. The Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti wines showcase rich fruit flavors and vibrant acidity. Additionally, La Spinetta's Moscato d'Asti is celebrated for its aromatic intensity and refreshing sweetness.

The estate also produces several single-vineyard wines, such as Barbaresco Gallina, Starderi, and Valeirano, which are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. Each wine in their portfolio is a testament to the Rivetti family's commitment to quality and their deep connection to the Piedmont terroir.

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2021)
Lots of flower petal, dried strawberry, cedar and milk chocolate character on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that build on the palate and are long and consistent. Turns soft at the end as it grows on the palate. Better in 2027 and on onwards.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2020)
The La Spinetta 2020 Barbaresco Bordini (with 10,000 bottles made) has a spicy note on first nose that recalls cinnamon and a touch of something darker like crushed clove. This warm-vintage expression of Nebbiolo embraces rich fruit aromas of blackberry and dark currant, and there is an earthy side with rusty nail and potting soil. It closes with high-toned accents of balsam herb or eucalyptus oil.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2019)
Both rich and dense, this Barbaresco exhibits aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry, iron, underbrush and earth. Dense and persistent, with fine balance overall and a lingering finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2018)
Flavors of sweet cherry and raspberry jelly mix with notes of black-currant pastille and cherry cola in this bold, spice-laden wine. The notes begin to harmonize toward the finish, brightened by hints of licorice and menthol.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 92 Points (2018)
Bordini has southeast exposition with sandy soils at 240 meters elevation. The 2018 Barbaresco Bordini offers soft floral aromas of candied peach, wild strawberry, and cinnamon. The palate is medium-bodied and inviting, with fresh raspberry, delicately steeped tea, and rosewater. It has fine tannins, and with its lean texture and refreshing acidity, it is prime for early drinking. Enjoy 2021-2028.

A postcard from Piedmont to express the love for our land, an affection that Giuseppe Rivetti, known as “Pin”, taught his sons Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio. The synergy between Barbera and Nebbiolo results in a bouquet of fruit, flowers, and spices. The balance between tannins and acidity makes this wine a perfect companion for food.
