This Shiraz honors the vision of pioneer Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry. In 1964, Jim purchased 70 acres of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of both grape variety and location.

This is a big, full-bodied Shiraz, opaque and deep crimson in colour.

The nose displays highly perfumed and floral aromas of cardamom, rose petals and fennel seed.

The palate has flavours of spearmint, boysenberry, plums and black cherries. Fine grained tannins are skilfully balanced with vivacious acidity and a velvety finish.

A wine made using the ‘Jim Barry’ method and as such can be enjoyed upon release but would equally benefit from a rest in the cellar to allow the wine to show some mature characteristics that come with age.

The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Delicious. 2018 puts this wine in such a spectacular place. And it is a good idea to taste this before you buy the Armagh, for they are possessed of the same purity of red fruit at their cores. This 2018 The McRae Wood Shiraz is lighter in frame and not as long as the Armagh, but it offers an excellent, value-for-money, dignified cellaring option. Sensational wine here. (Or you could just drink it, because it's delicious now, too.)

In typical Clare Valley fashion, this is both muscular and fresh, due to the region's unique climactic conditions. Heady notes of ripe plums and brambly berries are backed by secondary characters like beef jerky, savory herbs, boot polish and oak-based vanillin. The palate is powerful and chiseled with elevated acidity and taut, drying tannins. Fruit is concentrated and supported by plenty of oak. Protein and decanter are both necessities here.

An old-school, classically styled shiraz that has an assertive savory-framed core of red-plum and mulberry aromas and flavors. The nose is quite pared back, and the palate unleashes more showy power and spicy oak influence. A weighty finish. Drink now.

James Halliday (JH) : 94 Points (2013)

Firm with tannin and alive with promise. It's not the brightest spark but deep pools of blackberried fruit and swirls of firm coffeed tannin make it a monty for sound future development.
