This was the first wine produced by Esporão in 1985. Classic wine style made from estate grown grapes that show the consistency and the rich, ripe character which is typical of the best Alentejo wines. The first wine to be produced by Esporão in 1985. A classic wine made exclusively with grapes from Herdade do Esporão, it offers the consistency and personality typical of the unique terroir from whence it comes.

The viticulture employed involves integrated production methods which are based on rationalising natural resources and the use of natural regulation, thus contributing to sustainable agriculture that provides better-quality produce.

The grapes for this wine are hand-picked. For the red, they are vinified in small, temperature-controlled vats and, after being pressed, the wines age in American and French oak for 12 months. In the case of the white, the grapes are picked in the early, cooler hours of the morning, vinified separately and partially aged for 6 months on the lees in French and American oak barrels.

This is a wine for special occasions that combines the universal culture of wine and art, via the reproduction of original works of art on its labels.

A stunning blend of aromatic orange bitters, rich honeyed citrus and desiccated pineapple, with a soft, crunchy texture and a persistent note of peppery grapefruit on the finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2018)
Wood aged and rich, this wine is a ripe blend of Antão Vaz, Arinto and Roupeiro. The oak rounds out the natural freshness of the blend, softening it while leaving plenty of fine acidity. It will be ready to drink from 2020.

Robert Parker (RP) : 89 Points (2018)
The 2018 Reserva Branco is a roughly equal blend of Antão Vaz, Roupeiro and Arinto. It was aged for six months in a 65/35 mixture of stainless steel and new oak (American and French). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This was the year of the August heat wave, one that destroyed many vines. The winery says the heat wave lasted five consecutive days, with temperatures above 43 degrees Celsius, and there were strong gusts of wind that caused severe damage to "the varieties that are more sensitive to this type of weather, leading to production losses. However, most of our vineyards, which are planted primarily with varieties better adapted to these conditions, ripened slowly and regularly." Well, admittedly, I am not always sure whether such statements are propaganda or reality, but I have not been expecting a lot from Alentejo whites in 2018, yet this delivers. Fresh, clean and focused, it is a lively wine with some elegance—it doesn't seem thick or fleshy at all. It has enough stuffing to hold up to foods, and it is balanced enough to drink on its own. It should hold nicely for a few years too. It's a fine value. It even has a chance to improve. There were 32,600 cases produced.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2017)
This full-bodied white shows focus, with a vanilla cream undertone marking the apple filling, lemon curd and peach notes, edged with hints of spice and smoke. Offers a long, mineral-laced finish. Arinto, Roupeiro and Antão Vaz. Drink now through 2025.

The second wine of Alcohuaz was named after the southern constellation of the Crane, the vessel of materialization between divinity and humanity. Grus owes its characteristics to grapes that come from single vineyards located at multiple altitudes throughout the Alcohuaz property.

On the palate there is a vigor and liveliness to the wine and, as the aromas suggest, intense complexity and completeness. Its equilibrium enables the wine to show well young but at the same time it has an enormous potential for ageing.
