Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port (LBV) is a superb wine, selected from the finest production of a very good year. Whereas Vintage Port spends two years in casks and then matures in bottle, LBV is matured in seasoned oak and then bottled at between four and six years of age; hence the term, ‘Late Bottled’.

Its ageing process encourages the wine’s development; at the time of bottling it is therefore ready for drinking without the need for decanting.

Graham’s LBV represents centuries of experience and craftsmanship and is a reflection of the people who contribute to the making of the wine in the vineyard, the cellars, the cooperage and the tasting room, as well as the Graham’s Lodge where it ages since shortly after the harvest. Each lot of Graham’s LBV 2009 has been personally selected by Charles Symington, head winemaker, and António Monteiro, Graham’s cellar master.

Tasting Notes:

Graham’s 2009 LBV has a deep almost opaque colour, with an intense dark red rim.

On the nose, elegant aromas of red fruit and eucalyptus, combined with freshly picked mint and notes of the distinctive Douro Rockrose (Gum Cistus).

On the palate, rich red fruit flavours balanced by taut, peppery tannins. There is a fine backbone of schist minerality and balanced acidity, with a long and satisfying finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2011)
A fruity style, with concentrated flavors of dark cherry, plum tart and crushed violet, supported by fresh acidity. Chocolate and licorice details show on the finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2011)
The 2011 Late Bottled Vintage Port was bottled with a bar top cork and 111 grams per liter of residual sugar. If I thought the Dow's (reviewed this issue) had big aromatics, this may top it in its youth. Per the house styles, this seems friendlier and more exuberant in fruit flavor. It is just a bit tight, matching Dow's in structure, but the Dow's seems to surpass it in concentration. As often happens with these two houses, it is a matter of pros and cons for what you prefer as a style. This is the sexier, but not necessarily the better.

The wonders of wood: Graham's is one of the last Port companies with its own cooperage team, who care for each cask individually. This, combined with the skill of the Master Blender, has resulted in Graham's mastering the art of making an outstanding 30 Years Old Tawny Port
