Region and Vineyards
The Simonsberg sub-region of Stellenbosch, located in the heart of South Africa’s premier wine region, is renowned for its exceptional terroir. The vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, creating ideal conditions for growing premium red grape varieties. The cooling maritime influence from False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean tempers the summer heat, allowing for a slow and even ripening period.
Winemaking
The Glenelly Estate Reserve Red Blend is crafted from a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 15% Syrah, 11% Petit Verdot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. The grapes were meticulously hand-sorted and lightly crushed into stainless steel fermentation tanks. They underwent a cold soak for three days before natural fermentation commenced. During fermentation, the wine received three pump-overs daily to ensure optimal extraction of color, flavor, and tannins.
After fermentation, the wine experienced extended skin contact for an additional 2-3 weeks, enhancing its depth and structure. It was then transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and matured for 18 months. The barrels were racked approximately every four months to promote clarity and integrate flavors. This meticulous process results in a wine with remarkable complexity and aging potential.
