Vineyard:

The Aglianico grapes are produced in a historic vineyard named "Dal Re". This historic region of the Apennine countryside is known as Irpinia and it has a unique terroir and climate in which vineyards coexist with fruit trees, olives and aromatic herbs. The winds here divert a beneficial rainfall which creates a microclimate in Irpinia that differs from Campania, the winters though brief are snowy and cold and the summers can be wet and prolonged. The soils are uniquely volcanic, sandstone and marl. Each vineyard is closely monitored with a meteorological station, and the technologies of the new state-of-the-art wine cellar ensures that each vintage comes
as close to perfection as possible.

Winemaking:

Fermentation and maceration took place in stainless steel tanks and lasted for approximately three to four weeks. The wine was matured for a minimum of 12 months in medium-toasted French barriques and barrels of 50 hectolitres. The wine was then aged for a minimum of 12 months in bottle, prior to release.

Tasting Note:

A complex wine bursting with cherry jam, sweet spices, liquorice, coffee and cocoa notes balanced with a beautiful spicy minerality. A well structured wine with great length.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2013)
The 2013 Irpinia Aglianico Serpico reveals outstanding depth and centered focus. This balanced vintage (without the sudden heat spikes of 2012 and 2011) excels at providing us with a clear view of the quality of the fruit. This expression of Aglianico is redolent of dark blackberry, campfire ash and tar. The spicy wood element is evident, and the wine is quickly reaching a convincing level of fruit versus oak integration.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2012)
The 2012 Serpico comes from 100-year-old vines and spent 18 months in new French oak. It has a deep, rich, layered bouquet of mulled red and black fruits, toasted bread, dried herbs, and cured meats. This rich, round, full-bodied effort has plenty of ripe tannins, a rounded, evolved texture, beautiful balance, and a great finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2012)
Forest floor, leather, tilled soil, ripe berry and balsam are some of the aromas you'll find in this delicious red. The smooth, dense palate delivers blackberry jam, espresso, licorice and ground pepper flavors, blanketed with soft, silky tannins. Tobacco and graphite notes linger on the finish. Drink through 2020.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2012)
A red with chocolate, spices and hints of oak on the nose and palate. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Always a big yet structured and agile red. Try it in 2018.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2012)
Dense tannins are swathed in a tightly woven cloth of crushed black currant, tarry mineral, dried thyme and licorice snap flavors in this rich, full-bodied red. Long and focused, with a lasting, aromatic finish. Aglianico. Best from 2019 through 2029.
