Grapes for Fontalloro are grown on the Fontalloro and Poggio al Sole vineyards situated inside the Chianti Classico zone, and the Casalino and Arcidossino vineyards in the Chianti Colli Senesi zone. The vines are guyot trained, with a maximum of 5-8 buds per vine. They are over 50 years old, situated at an altitude of 400 metres above sea level. Soils here are calcareous in the Chianti Classico area and predominantly loamy and sandy on the borders of the Crete Senesi. Planting density is 5,400 per hectare.

Tasting Notes: A deep ruby wine with savoury notes and perfumes of spice and tobacco. The palate is powerful and concentrated with ripe tannins and a great structure supporting spiced autumnal fruit. Tremendous length with notes of blackberries and tobacco on the finish.

A fresh and crunchy Fontalloro with currants, orange peel and hints of peaches and cedar. Medium body, firm and fine tannins and a crisp and bright finish. Lots of energy and verticality to this! Drink after 2025.

Composed entirely of Sangiovese, the 2019 Fontalloro is a compelling wine, with layers of graphite, leather, cherry licorice, and Mediterranean herbs. Medium to full bodied, it has a weightless feel, although it is not lacking for concentration and ripe tannins. This continues to improve and evolve as it opens, so if opening now, it would be worth decanting. If you can, wait a while, since this will continue to improve over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2019 Fontalloro is all Sangiovese that is aged in new and second-year barriques for up to 20 months. This vintage is represented by a production of 45,000 bottles. The wine opens to a medium-dark garnet color with lots of rich fruit and oak spice. The tannins are dry and the wine is slightly thinner that I would have expected, especially for a vintage that is identified by extra concentration. With time in the glass, Fontalloro relaxes to show more volume and a broader presentation of dark fruit aromas.

Freshly turned soil, spent coffee grounds and pencil shavings are on the nose with just a hint of dried cherry opening onto a palate bursting with fresh cherries and orange peel, structured by tannins that are welcoming but nonetheless hold their integrity.

Presents plum, mulberry and earth flavors wrapped in smoky, toasty oak, with dense tannins underneath. Wiry and elegant yet balanced, with a lingering spice- and smoke-infused aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2024 through 2033.

The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won't be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here. A whole range of floral and savory accents lingers on the close.

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2016)

Profound spiciness here: cinnamon and clove, mingling with notes of chocolate and dark plum. Long, cherry-suffused, finish. A classy wine to enjoy with food.

Sistri were ancient Egyptian musical instruments linked to Isis, goddess of agriculture and fertility. A classic ripe-fruit Chardonnay nose, with a blend of tropical fruit, vanilla and appealing notes of spice.

Named after an ancient heliotherapy centre (Colonia), the Colonia vineyard was the result of a difficult replanting project begun in 1966 and completed only 1993. The very rocky soil of this vineyard is full of iron and magnesium which give it a typical red colour.
