Intense ruby red in colour, this wine opens with spicy aromas which are followed by earthy nuances, and hints of mineral, tobacco and wild berry. On the palate, it has intense tannins and concentrated flavours.

Vineyards:

The grapes come from the Colonia vineyard, planted in 1991, at the top of Poggio a Rancia, in the southernmost part of Chianti Classico, which is surrounded by forest. Vineyard density is 5,435 vines per hectare and the vines are trained to vertical trellises, spurred cordons and simple Guyot systems with a maximum of 5-8 buds per vine. Soils are the typical, rocky, white 'alberese' of the Chianti Classico area.

Vinification:

After a careful selection process, clusters were destemmed and pressed. Then the must was fermented and macerated in stainless-steel tanks for 16-20 days at 28°C-30°C, with regular punch-downs and daily pump-overs. In March and April, the new wine was racked into new French oak barrels. After 18-20 months of maturation, the final blend was assembled, bottled and aged in bottle for a minimum of 6-8 months.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 96 Points (2019)
A racy style defined by black cherry, blackberry, black currant, Tuscan scrub and mineral aromas and flavors, this red is linear and well-delineated. Like a thoroughbred, this has latent energy and is ready to run, given time to align all its components. Shows a stony, mineral aftertaste. (BS) (10/2023)

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)
The Fèlsina 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is a special wine. This vintage was a little tight and closed when I tasted it, but Colonia has a solid track record for a long bottle evolution. The bouquet brings dark fruit, rosemary, cherry and an especially sharp or chiseled mineral note that really is this wine's lasting signature. There are additional mineral hints of iron ore and rust with dried tomato, garden aromas, leafy greens and button mushroom. In all, this wine shows a very savory or autumnal edge over an elegant, mid-weight texture. (ML) (2/2023)

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Intense nose of wild blueberries, dried cherries, mint, roasted espresso and toffee. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a firm tannin frame. Structured and polished. Dense, toasty and compact for now. (7/2022)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2019)
The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is a bit marked by oak today, but behind that lies a wine of striking purity, depth and freshness. Dark red-fleshed fruit, crushed rocks, white pepper, spice and blood orange are some of the notes that meld together. There's a beautiful, layered wine waiting to emerge here. (AG) 94+ (6/2022)

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2019)
Floral aromas, on the palate the wine shows juicy red fruit with fresh zesty acidity. The tannins are balanced giving structure and there's an understated note of oak. Elegant. (Panel tasting) (3/2023)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2019)
Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Rusty nail, sweet raspberry and just a suggestion of oak. Supple, elegant raspberry fruit with a pinch of oak on the palate and bags of earthy-tasting, fine tannins. Very long and precise and gaining in depth on the finish. 17.5/20 points (WS) (2/2023)

Bodegas Albamar Ceibo Godello is a testament to the winemaking heritage and expertise of Xurxo Alba's family, who have long been associated with the production of Albariño in Rías Baixas, Spain. This white wine, originating from a Valdeorras vineyard planted with old vines on slate soils, is an exemplary showcase of the Godello grape.
