A pretty red colour with ruby-red highlights.

Expressive on the nose, with a broad range of aromas that denote tremendous complexity, featuring red fruit such as cherry, cassis, and raspberry, subtler notes of red currant, tobacco, and hazelnuts, and some balsamic tones.

Voluptuous on the palate, this wine features extremely fine, firm, and sweet tannins along with bitter chocolate, cherries, and sweet spice flavours.

Its outstanding acidity gives the wine a youthful, refreshing feeling, which presages an excellent cellaring potential.

Origins The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley - 100km North of the capital. Recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives… Read more

Very much a reflection of the long growing season and the overall excellence of the 2018 vintage, this also exemplifies the more restrained style of Don Max that’s been apparent since 2014. Cabernet Sauvignon occupies the limelight, with a supporting cast made up of 30% Malbec, Carmenère, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, in this focused, balanced, mint and green herb-scented cuvée. Fresh, nuanced and layered, it has enticing, deftly integrated (71% new) wood, filigree tannins, blackcurrant and black cherry flavours and a core of pithy natural acidity.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2018)
The violets, roses, blueberries and blackcurrants flow from the glass. Full-bodied, tight and very focused with ultra-fine tannins that flow over the edges of the wine. Extremely long and polished. Needs time to open. Better after 2022.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2018)
The red 2018 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 7% Carmenere, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc that fermented in stainless steel, open vats and eggs and matured in French oak barrels, 65% of them new, for 22 months. The oak is perfectly integrated, and the wine has a fresh profile with 13.5% alcohol and a creamy texture with refined tannins and a long, dry and vibrant finish. This is a serious wine, somewhat a little shy, pure, balanced ad subtle, very complete and with integrated oak. It's juicy but also fine and probably the best of the modern vintages so far.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2018)
The 2018 Don Maximiano is 70% Cabernet, 15% Malbec, 7% Carménère, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc from Panquehue, Aconcagua. Intense purple in the glass, it delivers a nose of red fruit with plum, a little jam, black currant, mint, balsamic notes and rose over secondary woody aromas. Ample and juicy on the palate with good energy; the tannins are fine and the flavors intense. A wine that might be described as the missing link between the past and the present.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2017)
The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 by Don Maximiano Errazuriz and this is the 150th anniversary bottling of the wine named in his honour. A Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Malbec (12%), Carmenere (8%), Petit Verdot (7%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). Winemaker Francisco Baettig describes the 2017 as 'the freshest Don Maximiano that we've made in modern times'. Rich black cherry and blackberry aromas are edged in vanilla, spice and chocolate with a whisper of florality. Careful oak management (22 months in French oak, 72% new) is reflected in a balanced palate, with mature, rounded tannins; the cassis, cherry and raspberry fruit is overlaid with cocoa, leather and spice notes, buoyed with notable freshness.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 95 Points (2017)
Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec, and the rest Carménère, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve offers up a classic Bordeaux-like nose of darker currants and cassis as well as lead pencil, spicy oak, and tobacco. This carries to a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Cabernet with good concentration, ripe yet savory tannins, and outstanding length.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2017)
Patented Chilean aromas of herbas, blackberry and dark plum are spicy and feature a fair amount of oak and related wood smoke. On the palate, this Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend is juicy and high in energy. Plum, currant and wild berry flavors maintain a sense of freshness on the finish. Overall, this is showy and complex. Best from 2022 to 2030. Cellar Selection.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2014)
Svelte, featuring firm tannins behind the juicy dark cherry, plum and wild berry flavors. Savory midpalate, offering a finish that lingers with notes of green herbs and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2022

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2013)
Feb 2015 - Dark luscious purplish crimson colour. Freshness is the watchword on the nose, as opposed to the rich ripeness of the Maipo Cabs. Quite subtle and a bit minty. Tannins very well managed. Well put together. But it’s pretty muscular as opposed to fleshy. Dry tea-leaf flavours on the finish. Should make old bones.
