A pretty red colour with ruby-red highlights.

Expressive on the nose, with a broad range of aromas that denote tremendous complexity, featuring red fruit such as cherry, cassis, and raspberry, subtler notes of red currant, tobacco, and hazelnuts, and some balsamic tones.

Voluptuous on the palate, this wine features extremely fine, firm, and sweet tannins along with bitter chocolate, cherries, and sweet spice flavours.

Its outstanding acidity gives the wine a youthful, refreshing feeling, which presages an excellent cellaring potential.

Origins The Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley - 100km North of the capital. Recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard. Today, the tradition of quality lives… Read more

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2016)
The 2016 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Malbec, Carmenère and Cabernet Franc from their estate vineyards in Panquehue. It fermented in stainless steel vats and matured in French oak barrels (65% new) for 22 months. It's an ultra classical Aconcagua Cabernet-based blend with good ripeness while keeping the freshness, and it has generous oak that does not overwhelm but makes the wine softer and spicier. It has some fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. The very classical label is very coherent with an updated classical blend. 78,000 bottles produced. It was bottled between February and April 2018 in three homogeneous lots.

Tim Atkin (TA) : 96 Points (2014)
Made as a blend since 2004, this is still Cabernet Sauvignon-based, with Carmenère, Malbec and Petit Verdot for company. It’s a wonderfully elegant, silky cuvée with floral, fineboned flavours of graphite, red plum and blackcurrant, bright acidity and very subtle oak. Deceptively forward, it will age well in bottle. 2018-28

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2014)
Very cool black currant and blackberry aromas with hints of flowers. Full body, pretty integrated tannins and a bright and fruity finish. Hints of walnuts and berries on the finish. Chocolate undertone. A blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 18% carmenere, 9% malbec and 5% petit verdot. Better in 2020.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2014)
Complex elegant aromas of sandalwood, spiced candle, blackberry and chocolate set the stage for an alert snappy palate with acidic and tannic clamp. Plenty of oak and related vanilla and spice flavors accent crisp jumpy red-fruit notes prior to a firm long finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2014)
Svelte, featuring firm tannins behind the juicy dark cherry, plum and wild berry flavors. Savory midpalate, offering a finish that lingers with notes of green herbs and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2022

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2013)
Feb 2017 - Bright purple. Expansive aromas of black currant, cherry liqueur, vanilla, cured tobacco and black pepper, backed by a hint of smokiness. Supple, sweet and broad, offering palate-coating black and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors and a touch of candied licorice that comes up slowly with air. Plenty rich, but there's real vivacity here as well. Closes on a suave floral note, with excellent clarity and smooth tannins lending gentle grip. In the category of high-end, Bordeaux-inspired red wines from Chile, this one delivers outstanding value. -- Josh Raynolds

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2013)
Feb 2015 - Dark luscious purplish crimson colour. Freshness is the watchword on the nose, as opposed to the rich ripeness of the Maipo Cabs. Quite subtle and a bit minty. Tannins very well managed. Well put together. But it’s pretty muscular as opposed to fleshy. Dry tea-leaf flavours on the finish. Should make old bones.
