More information on wine critics and ratings

In the spectrum of people who pay attention to detail, winemakers are often incredibly detail oriented. This can sometimes spill over to become an internal battled, and, as Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena state, "We are our own worst enemy." El Enemigo pays homage to this internal struggle.

Tasting Notes:

The nose presents sweet aromas of black ripen fruits with hints of vanilla and chocolate, which appear after the oak ageing. The mouthfeel is sweet with structured,

The wines of El Enemigo are meant to give a flavour of Argentina’s wine history while at the same time pushing new boundaries. Although wine has been in Argentina for centuries, it is only comparatively recently that their wines have reached the same quality levels as the Old World.

The winemakers at El Enemigo wanted to make light of the fact Argentina has embraced both aspects of modern winemaking, fresh and fruity New World style wines as well as classic “Old World” style wines. At their vineyards, they use up to date modern techniques in order to select bunches of grapes at their optimum ripeness whilst the wines they produce are firmly within the classic style of Argentinean wines.

Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil created El Enemigo when they decided to join together their collective experience to produce wines that would be among the top of their country. It’s hard to see how they could have had a better start. Adrianna is from arguably the most famous winemaking dynasty of Argentina, while Alejandro Vigil was head of the soil division of Argentina’s Wine Institute and winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata. Between the two of them, they have an unsurpassed knowledge of the Mendoza area and were able to select sites that would yield grapes in exactly the style they wanted.

El Enemigo source their grapes from vineyards in the Uco Valley which is generally considered one of the finest areas of Mendoza for producing wines. Everything from the soil to the weather is virtually ideal for growing grapes, the amount of sun and general lack of rain means a long growing season. The ideal conditions in the Uco Valley mean the winemakers at El Enemigo are able to work with grapes that had fallen out of favour in their native land at levels of ripeness and quality that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2019)
The blend of the 2019 Gran Enemigo changed to 40% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from Gualtallary, in a year when they used less Malbec and more Cabernet. It has restrained 13.5% alcohol and an incredibly balanced palate, very tasty and juicy, with impressive herbal notes intermixed with ripe berries. If there's something these wines don't have, it's sweetness. They are austere and complete, serious and designed for the long run.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2019)
Glossy, stemmy sour cherries, tapenade and white pepper with a nice touch of sauerkraut, cocoa powder, warm stone minerality and herbs. Fleshy and fresh on the medium- to full-bodied palate with succulent fruit, spices and lots of fine, chalky tannins that dissolve into a long, naturally rendered finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2019)
This is an elegant Cabernet Franc with 15% Malbec. Coming from Gualtallary’s limestone soils, it has a fine chalky texture and saline notes. Delicate aromas of rosemary, graphite and wild berries dance on the nose. The fresh palate exhibits a blend of herbs, blackberries and a hint of balsamic. Sip it slowly, as it continues to evolve in the glass.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2019)
Slow to reveal itself, this medium-bodied blend offers a subtle floral undercurrent to the vibrant core of boysenberry, adding pepper and spice details. Delivers just enough acidity and tannins for a balanced structure. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2030.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2017)
The 2017 Gran Enemigo is half Malbec and 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from Gualtallary, Uco Valley, along with a 10% dash of Petit Verdot from Luján de Cuyo. It was 30% fermented with stems and aged in French barrels and foudres. The complex nose delivers notes of plum jam, black tea, mint and herbs combined with redcurrants and notes from the aging process such as cedar and ash. In the mouth, it’s intense with a vigorous flow and firm, tannic structure in which the freshness and concentration help to create an easygoing but substantial style before the lengthy finish, which is full of nuanced aromas. Drinking window: 2021 - 2037

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2017)
Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena make this malbec-focused blend at their winery in the southern foothills of Maipú. Cabernets sauvignon and franc dominate the aromas, red and spicy, flecked with cedar. Once you drink it, though, there’s no mistaking the weight of malbec. Peppercorn spice adds some complexity to the dark, powerful fruit, and the sappy finish recalls the cedar up front. It’s rich, but there’s just enough freshness to dial it back to a nice place.
