Region and Vineyards

The Dog Point Vineyard is situated in the Wairau Valley, Marlborough, a region celebrated for its ideal grape-growing conditions.

The vineyard comprises 26-year-old vines on average, with some plantings dating back to 1984. The soils are primarily silty-clay loams with some gravelly patches, contributing to the wine's complexity and minerality.

Winemaking

The fruit underwent whole bunch pressing followed by cold settling before fermentation. Notably, 60% of the wine was fermented using indigenous yeasts, enhancing its unique character. The wine was aged for four months in stainless steel tanks and was bottled without fining, preserving its purity and freshness.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale straw.
  • Aroma: The nose is pure and bright with aromas of grapefruit and white peach. There are subtle smoky and gravelly tones that add complexity beyond the immediate fruit profile.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is juicy and plush with flavors of white-fleshed fruit. It boasts a refreshing and well-defined acidity, balancing the sunny fruit profile and finishing clean and dry.

Wine Pairing Ideas

Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes:

  • Seafood: Perfect with freshly shucked oysters or grilled fish, the wine’s acidity complements the brininess and enhances the delicate flavors of seafood.
  • Goat Cheese: The tangy and creamy characteristics of goat cheese are well-balanced by the wine’s crisp acidity and fruitiness.
  • Light Salads: Pair with salads featuring citrus fruits, avocado, or a light vinaigrette to match the wine’s fresh and vibrant profile.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2023)
Lush and expressive, with plenty of concentration to the mix of mango, lemon curd and litsea oil flavors. Details of dried pineapple, candied ginger and crystalized orange zest add complexity and aromatics on the long finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2023)
The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is flinty and gray scale on the nose, with graphite, asphalt, white paper, preserved lemon rind and dried sage. In the mouth, the tropical fruit continues to be kept at bay, while the aroma notes continue through the length of the palate. this is a classy wine, all elegance and restraint. It's very different from the 2024—what I would classify as "more classical"—tasted alongside. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2023)
Concentrated, pure fruit flavors. It’s light in body but dense in concentration thanks to low yields, displaying both focus and punch. It’s almost silvery in color and restrained, thanks to hand-picking leading to pure grapefruit and passion fruit flavors alongside a hint of nectarine. The finish is long, precise and sinewy.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2023)
Clean and crisp with grapefruit, green melon and lemon character. Hints of stones. Medium body. Lovely acidity and a delicious finish. Some phenolic tension here. From organically grown grapes.
