Behind the name:

Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly affects vineyards all over the world. Often affected vines are severely pruned or replanted. One half, or an 'arm' of the vine slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side, while low yielding, display amazing intensity.

Winemaking:

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used French and old American oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, there is no racking until final blending and no fining or filtration.

Tasting notes:

This iconic wine always displays the power and intensity of McLaren Vale Shiraz, yet has an elegance and refinement that few other wines from the region possess. It’s vibrant and lifted on the nose with bustling red fruits and savoury spice. The palate is long, linear and pure with tightly wound tannin and mouth-watering acidity. Beneath the layers of blueberry, pomegranate and Satsuma Plum is an intriguing core of earth and crushed rocks. If stored correctly, this wine should age for 15+ years.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2017)
Chester Osborn’s collection of old-vine shiraz parcels includes a lot of plants that have lost a limb to Eutypa, a vine disease; they now concentrate their efforts on the fruit growing on the remaining arms. This 2017 shows that concentration in a wine that radiates sun from its blue-black fruit contrasted with earthiness in its rooty, radish-like tannins.

Decanter (DCT) : 94 Points (2017)
A very dry but mild growing season with many cool nights has produced a lifted Shiraz of good intensity and detail. Bright blackberry fruit is riven with red licorice and fennel seed spice plus dried rose top notes. Plentiful but fine minerally, earthy tannins lend structure and length. For now, wearing its alcohol very well – highly promising.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2017)
This is a very composed and nicely layered rendition of this top-end shiraz with aromas of cocoa, dark plums, blackberries, cinnamon, licorice and dark cherries. The palate has a very impressive build of ripe dark-fruit and chocolate flavors. Layered and expansive, it swells impressively through the finish. Smoothly resolved and gently spicy. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2017)
Locked up tight and ungiving on the nose, d'Arenberg's 2017 The Dead Arm Shiraz is nonetheless formidably dense and concentrated on the palate. Notes of charred wood join plums, raspberries and black olives in this full-bodied effort. With its current surly disposition, it appears to require decanting or several years' sleep in a cool cellar. Giving it air helped bring out purple raspberries and softened the considerable tannins, so I'm optimistic about its future evolution. Rating: 92+

James Halliday (JH) : 90 Points (2017)
A fine spread of tannin and lingering length, but charm has been left at the door. Resin, stressed herb, alcohol warmth and baked plum flavours form the mainstay of the wine, and while it's hefty, it's a long way from being a peak release for this label. - Campbell Mattinson

Wine Spectator (WS) : 89 Points (2015)
Appealing for the chewy tannins and rustic take on ripe wild berry flavors. Black tea and fresh herb notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 91 Points (2014)
In typical d'Arenberg style, this top-tier red is deeply hued and in need of many years in the cellar. Currently, it's emanating aromas of Black Forest cake, dried mint, licorice, warm pavement and tangy cranberry. The palate is plush and chocolatey, with sinewy tannins and balanced acidity. Drink 2021–2033.

Tasted Oct 2016 - Flashy, grainy, tough and formidable - a true wine to age. Black fruit all the way with prominent burnt notes. (RH)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2012)
Mar 2016 - Youthful purple. Primary black and blue fruits, floral pastilles, Indian spices and vanilla on the deeply perfumed nose, with a smoky mineral quality adding urgency and lift. Sweet, deeply pitched boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors spread out impressively on the palate, picking up spiciness and a touch of mocha on the back half. This lush, broad, seamless Shiraz finishes with excellent clarity and smooth tannins that contribute structure and gentle grip. -- Josh Raynolds
