From this melange of parcels, the grapes are hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts before spending over a year in small French oak barrels without racking to produce our Te Muna Road Pinot Noir – a dark and brooding wine with a silky layered texture that provides interest and complexity.

Tasting note: Deep red colour. Prominent aromatics of black cherry and boysenberry overshadow subtle notes of rose petal, bark, and a hint of fresh mint.

Rich on the palate, fine oak and intriguing mushroom, soy and dried herb flavours provide complexity to the sweet dark fruited core of this wine. The finish is long and lithe.

Craggy Range was founded in 1997 when Terry Peabody and Steve Smith MW set about seeking out and buying the best vineyard sites in New Zealand. They planted them with vines best suited to each terroir with the ambition to produce single vineyard wines that would compete with the best in the world. It is this simple philosophy that drives the entire system of farming and winemaking at Craggy Range. The wine team is headed by Steve Smith MW in his role as Director of Wine and Viticulture. Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2016)
Lovely ripe red cherry, dark plum and raspberry perfume with a note of cinnamon and smoke. There’s good texture here and some layers of complexity running from savory to violet. Fresh and elegant.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2016)
Bright red cherries and blueberries on the nose and palate. This has an elegantly fresh, chalky feel. Bright, even and balanced. Very drinkable, flavorsome and elegant pinot. Drink now. Screw cap.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2016)
Dark, fleshy blackberry and black cherry flavors are intense and concentrated, with notes of fresh earth, forest floor and white pepper on a velvety frame. Hints of black tea linger on the finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 91 Points (2016)
This is an approachable drop now, but could happily cellar for another seven to eight years. The fragrant nose offers ripe red cherry, floral, cinnamon, clove, damp earth and a lick of oak spice. Medium bodied, the palate is slippery textured and laced together with savory, grainy tannins. The oak rears up a little on the palate but is relatively balanced by the tangy red berry fruit.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2015)
Craggy Range's 2015 Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir is a fine example of Martinborough Pinot Noir, boasting savory overtones of earth and spice to go along with bold black cherry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with smooth, supple tannins and crisp acids that illuminate the finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2014)
Selected from the upper terrace at the Te Muna Road estate, where pinot noir grows in stony clay soils, this is an elegant wine with lasting scents of roses and aged beef. The tart cherry fruit buzzes with energy, adding to the wine’s gracious refinement. Open and yielding now, this will only gain complexity with a few years of bottle age.

Burghound (BH) : 90 Points (2013)
A restrained nose requires aggressive swirling to eventually liberate the somewhat somber aromas of herbal tea, dark currant, plum, spice and violet scents. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the round and supple yet punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing texture, all wrapped in a delicious, complex and sneaky long finish where a hint of acid tang appears. While this is already approachable I would be inclined to allow it another 3 to 5 years of bottle age as I suspect that tang will eventually round out.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2012)
Tasted Mar 2015 - The ripest, sweetest red fruit on the nose - heart on sleeve stuff. Could only be Kiwi Pinot. Pleasingly light and drinkable on the palate. No tannic presence at all. Very little flavour beyond that incredibly pure fruit - but it's worth aging for complexity to emerge. (RH)
