Region and Vineyards

The Adrianna Vineyard is situated in the Gualtallary district of the Uco Valley, Mendoza, at an altitude of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet), making it one of the world's highest vineyard sites. Nicolás Catena pioneered this high-altitude viticulture, discovering that cooler temperatures at this elevation preserved natural acidity and enhanced polyphenols, while intense mountain sunlight strengthened tannins, creating wines with extraordinary complexity and ageability.

The soils of Adrianna are predominantly calcareous and silty-loam, scattered with ancient limestone and marine deposits. These limestone-rich layers are well-drained and support rhizobacteria that help vine roots endure the vineyard's cold, arid conditions, enabling them to absorb essential nutrients. The Adrianna Vineyard is extensively studied, with significant efforts by the Catena Institute to monitor biodiversity, soil health, and climate patterns, making it one of the most scientifically documented vineyards in the world.

Winemaking

Mundus Bacillus Terrae is produced from a 1.4-hectare parcel within the Adrianna Vineyard. Grapes are harvested in the first week of April. The wine undergoes 16 days of alcoholic fermentation with pumpover maceration for an extended period of 8 to 13 days, followed by full malolactic fermentation to soften acidity. The wine is then aged for 24 months in a combination of 225-liter and 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by an additional 24 months of bottle aging to enhance complexity and integration.

This 100% Malbec has an alcohol content of 14%, characterized by its great concentration, vibrant acidity, and refined tannins.

History of Catena Zapata Estate

Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, Catena Zapata has been a family-owned winery for over a century. The estate saw significant evolution under the leadership of Nicola’s grandson, Nicolás Catena Zapata, who joined the family business in the early 1980s.

Nicolás Catena's vision was instrumental in transforming the Argentinian wine industry. His focus on high-altitude viticulture, particularly in the Andean foothills, has been a key factor in achieving the unique expression of Mendoza's wines.

Nicolás Catena’s daughter, Dr. Laura Catena, a Harvard and Stanford-trained biologist and physician, joined the winery in the 1990s. She has continued her father's legacy, emphasizing scientific research and sustainable practices. Under her guidance, Catena Zapata has been at the forefront of vineyard research, studying the effects of altitude, climate, and soil on wine quality.

Region and Vineyards

Catena Zapata is located in the Mendoza region, specifically in the sub-regions of Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley. The vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 920 meters (3,020 feet) to 1,450 meters (4,757 feet) above sea level. The high-altitude vineyards provide a unique microclimate with significant diurnal temperature variations, which contribute to the grapes' complex flavors and balanced acidity.

The estate’s top vineyards include:

From the 1.4ha vineyard at almost 1,3900m elevation, this 100% Malbec is intensely fragrant and floral on the nose with milk chocolate and pink flowers. So lovely, smooth, silky and chalky, a subtle and satisfying balance between lively acidity, concentrated fruit and knitted tannin structure. Ripe but controlled, gorgeous salinity and spice throughout as well as pure blackcurrant and cherry fruit. Savoury aspects dominate the finish but this has a lot to like and feels well constructed with a juicy core. A gorgeous wine with serious ageing potential. The 2020 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae hails from a small parcel of a vineyard in Gualtallary, Uco Valley and was barrel-aged for 18 months. Dark purple in the glass. The expressive, layered nose delivers notes of blackberry, plum, lavender and violet with a pinch of herbs. Intense and concentrated but agile in feel, the palate is taut, while the fine-grained, chalky tannins are enlivened by the acidity, which teases out the lovely ripe flavors toward the end. This is a substantial but juicy red, everything you’d want from a high altitude wine. (JH)

Fascinating nose of blue flowers, blueberries, sea shells, moss and lemon grass. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine, silky tannins. So fresh and elegant with bright, saline character. Still a little reserved. Try after 2024.

Robert Parker (RP) : 97 Points (2020)
Tasting the 2020 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae next to the 2019 showed a different aromatic profile of darker fruit, denoting ripeness and sun. The wine was still very young with a luxurious, creamy texture and mouthfeel. 2020 was an extremely dry year (70% lower than the average with just 282 liters!), and the grapes were picked two to three weeks earlier. It has a bright, saturated color and a heady nose with ripe berries and a spicy, smoky twist from 19 months in oak vats. It's medium to full bodied, with a soft texture and velvety tannins, sleek and seamless. 5,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.

The gothic label, drawn by Rick Shaefer, depicts malbec’s journey to Argentina through four women, from its ancestral home in Cahors under the stewardship of Eleanor of Aquitaine to its new world home in the Catena family’s vineyards. This wine hails from a mass selection of ungrafted malbec vines planted during the 1920s in the Angélica Vineyard; the original plant material arrived from France before that country’s 19th century bout with phylloxera. A second mass selection from these vines was planted in the Nicasia Vineyard in 1996. It ferments in new French oak, including 20 percent of the fruit as whole bunches, pointing up the purple-blue-black fruit complexity that grounds the wine while an airy whipped-coffee edge adds levity. Rich and intense but not heavy, this will reward years of cellaring, but it’s hard to feel too bad about opening a bottle now when it tastes this good.
