Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)
This is the most accessible Barolo from Vietti and the wine that casts the biggest net in terms of fruit sourcing from across many MGA sites. The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is a layered and generous wine that reflects the main takeaways offered by this very successful vintage. In fact, because this wine is not from a single site, it speaks more to the quality of the vintage than it does to any one specific vineyard. The Castiglione reveals generous richness and concentrated cherry fruit with dark saturation and good structure that comes from the thicker skins developed on Nebbiolo grapes this year. It concludes with a salty mineral note that adds focus and elegance.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2019)
The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Extremely perfumed with hibiscus, flowers and watermelon with some fresh cherries. Medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Very solid. Made from about 20 different vineyards. Needs time to soften. Vegan.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 93 Points (2019)
Moving into more classically styled Barolo, the 2019 Barolo Castiglione has benchmark pure aromas and character of blood orange, raspberry licorice, fresh herbs, and fresh red flowers. It is taut with good intensity and is gripping with ripe tannins, driving but not harsh acidity, and a rocky mineral texture. Pure and clean, with red berries, turned earth, and bergamot, this is another outstanding entry to the range of Barolo from Vietti that will be deserving of time in cellar and drink.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2018)
A savory version, boasting eucalyptus, juniper, earth and tobacco aromas and flavors around a core of cherry. Firm and dry, with a chalky feel on the finish. Elegant and refined. Best from 2025 through 2037.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2017)
Vietti’s blended Barolo is bold and ripe in the 2017 vintage, its red-cherry and strawberry flavors framed by ferrous tannins that infuse the wine with cool energy. As usual, two-thirds of the fruit for Castiglione comes from Ravera, a cool corner of Barolo where winds from the Alps helped preserve acidity and kept the fruit tones crunchy and bright. Scents of fresh violets and rose petals accent the wine and add to its appeal.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2016)
While the exact blend of parcels varies from year to year, the backbone of Castiglione always comes from the Ravera cru of Novello. It has a dark and brooding character and takes time to open up. Winter mint, cedar and an intriguing earthiness offset nuances of red cherry and violets as they slowly emerge. Firm, vertical tannins shore up the palate but remain effortlessly sophisticated in this powerful and dense Barolo.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2015)
Subtle aromas suggesting mature darkskinned berries, menthol and tobacco mingle with a light whiff of violet. The full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, unripe cranberry, licorice and the heat of evident alcohol alongside assertive, close-grained tannins that leave an austere, astringent finish.
