With sauvignon blanc grapes of such quality, minimal winemaking means the finer aromatics and flavours are preserved. At the winery, the grapes were chilled, gently pressed, and the juice cold-settled before fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Notes:
Lemon diamond in colour, Estate Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc ’18 immediately entrances with the aroma of tropical passionfruit, mango, and honeydew melon. With notes of lifted gooseberry, lime blossom, pears and summer herbs, the palate is generous and dry, carrying effortlessly to a balanced and delicate, fine and crisp finish.

Today, the estate comprises 250ha, with 150ha under vine, and produces 40000 cases exclusively from these plantings. Two thirds of the production is Cabernets/Merlot, Chardonnay and Syrah. Te Mata Estate Winery originated as part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land-holding established by English immigrant John Chambers in 1854. John's third son, Bernard had the original vision for wine production and planted grape vines on three parcels of hillside land above the homestead,… Read more

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2022)
The 2022 Estate Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc has been fully tank fermented, no solids, but it was left on the lees post-ferment for texture. There are notes of cheesecloth, pineapple lumps, Pink Lady apples and saline acidity. It’s fleshy, with preserved citrus, juicy acidity and plenty of brine, then sugar snap peas, Nashi pears and a hint of guava/lychee. The fruit was sourced totally from the estate vineyards in Hawkes Bay; Havelock Hills, Gimblett Gravels and Dartmoor. 12.7% alcohol.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2022)
An inviting nose of green apples, pears, lime and dragon fruit. Medium-bodied with supple texture. Elegant and refined with an array of fresh apple and citrus fruit and a succinct finish. Sustainable.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 91 Points (2020)
This Hawke’s Bay wine from historic Te Mata winery is a few bucks more than your average New Zealand SB. It’s worth every penny. With depth and balance, it opens with notes of lime zest, fresh peach, beeswax, bell pepper and heaps of dried green herbs. Roll this around on your tongue for a while and savor all those fruity, herbal flavors rumbling around amid a chalky mouthfeel and crisp acidity. It’s very young still but a few more months in the bottle should settle it down nicely.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 89 Points (2016)
Grassy, with a fresh green note to the crisp lemon-lime, grapefruit and green apple flavors, finishing with an intense, lean, minerally streak. Drink now. 5,000 cases made.
