Colour: golden yellow with lively green glints

Nose: rich and intense. Aromas of peach, golden apple, white figs, vanilla cream, meringue. Hints of hazelnut and ‘zagara’ honey. The wood is shy but well balanced

Palate: soft, round, energetic, full. The balance is characterized by a fine acidity, fresh flavour and substantial body

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2021)

One of Sicily's most famous white wines, Planeta Chardonnay has been produced in the village of Menfi since 1995. It's modern in style, fermented and aged in French oak, 40% new, for a minimum of 12 months. This latest release has quite tropical notes of pineapple, melon and warm peach stone fruit, white flowers, some juicy citrus and a vanilla spice aspect from the oak. Powerful but with elegance.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)

The Planeta 2019 Sicilia Menfi Chardonnay is a true beauty, and it's incredible to think that as many as 200,000 bottles were produced at this quality. The wine boasts a slightly old-school personality for oak-aged Chardonnay, but it is remarkably vibrant and quick-footed nonetheless. Instead of overt toast or butter, this wine shows all-Sicilian notes of toasted almond and candied fruit. It offers a medium gold color and a lifted, mid-weight texture. Fresh acidy adds sharpness and focus. The Planeta family is doing wonders with Chardonnay (you might also try the fabulous Didacus), and you can't beat this price point.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 90 Points (2019)

The sweetly scented 2019 Chardonnay opens up with an alluring bouquet of dusty yellow florals, dried apricot, sage and hints of almond. It boasts oily, glycerol-like textures, lifted by stimulating acids, citrus-tinged orchard fruits and minerals. This is rich and savory with power in reserve, tapering off a bit tropical yet in perfect balance. A salty flourish keeps you coming back to the glass for more.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2018)

This Chardonnay opens with aromas of ripe yellow apple, coconut and pineapple. The firm palate offers vanilla, toasted oak and hazelnut alongside fresh acidity.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2017)

Mango dessert, banoffee pie, vanilla, parmesan and apricot compote make for a very opulent nose indeed. Despite the resounding intensity, the full-bodied and dense palate has enough acidity to lift the fleshy tropical fruit and, unbelievably, this ends quite bright. Drink now.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2015)

Bright and expressive, this elegant white is finely knit, with rich accents of oak spice and toast underscoring flavors of lemon parfait, Gala apple and lime blossom. Fine and creamy, presenting a lingering, minerally finish. Drink now through 2025. 25,000 cases made.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 15.5 Points (2013)

This was grown in Sambuca and half comes from the original vineyard planted in 1999. The other half is from a new, cooler, higher vineyard planted at 450 m elevation at the beginning of this century. About half went into new oak. It's all fine but of course seems a little mainstream and lacks the tension of the Etna wines. Sweet start, crisp finish

Etna Bianco 2020

Tasting Note: Vibrant Sicilian white wine from volcanic soil, rounded, fruity and perfumed with yellow plums, white stone fruit and herbs.

Food Matching: A white wine for all seasons. Good as an aperitif, but excellent with starters based on fish and pasta.

Vinification: The grapes are picked into crates and are at once refrigerated at 8°C. After light crushing and destemming they are soft pressed. The decanted must is racked and inoculated with yeasts then ferments at 15°C for 20 days. The wine thus obtained remains on the lees until February with continuous mixing. 10% of the must is fermented in barriques. The wine is then matured in stainless steel tanks and Allier oak 225 litre barriques.
