More information on wine critics and ratings

This wine is cherry red in colour and exhibits a deep intensity, indicating that it will age long and well.

In the nose, the first notes are balsamic aromas, berries and undergrowth typical of the Ribera del Duero. These are complemented with hints of spice (traditional in French oak), such as cinnamon, leather, tobacco, truffles & liquorice.

In the mouth, this wine is complex, with sweet tannins that envelop the palate and cover it with an exquisite roundness. Long lasting and persistent, it is a wine that opens itself up slowly to the senses as one tastes it.

Picón Capellanes is a wine with a long life ahead of it. Today, its qualities are better than ever, and in the future, it will become even better, developing additional roundness and fullness in the bottle.

The Rodero-Villa family began to realise their dream back in the 1980s by converting the modest estate, then consisting of a mere 2000 vines, into the 100-hectare estate it is today to demonstrate their constant commitment to quality. All harvest yields are actively reduced to 5,000 kg/ha, well below the permitted allowance of 7000 kg/ha. The vineyards of Pago de los Capellanes are made up of 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with resulting wines that are powerful and elegant with glossy texture,… Read more

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2011)
Dense and muscular, this big red remains fresh and focused, with cherry and berry flavors mingling with cocoa, licorice and black olive notes. Fresh acidity balances the firm, well-integrated tannins. Bold and harmonious, in the modern style. Drink now through 2026. 200 cases made.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2011)
Produced in a warm year that delivered concentrated and tannic wines, the 2012 Parcela El Picón shows all those characteristics with plenty of extraction and tannin in a style of yesteryear. It matured in new French barrels after being concentrated by bleeding, which I find unbelievable and completely unnecessary—and so is the price tag. For those who are fans of very oaky, extracted, tannic, powerful reds—and also have a disposable income. 2,500 bottles were filled in March 2015. As a curiosity, I tasted from a magnum.

Familia Zuccardi Q Tempranillo 2014
The front label of the Zuccardi Q range illustrates the stone walls of Zuccardi’s winery, rising from the soil and symbolising how the Andes mountains emerged millions of years ago.
Like the winery, Q Tempranillo is a wine of great structure, with notes of tobacco, leather and chocolate.

The Zuccardi winery is located in Paraje Altamira at the foot of the Andes, where a selection of the grapes for the Apelación Cabernet Franc are sourced. Combined with grapes from San Pablo (1400 metres above sea level) the resulting wine has a ruby red colour, firm tannins, a lush acidity and great ageing potential.
