Beautiful deep purplish-red in colour, this wine opens with notes of sweet spice and a bit of chocolate, followed by a layer of black fruit that builds alongside varietal notes that recall black pepper, soy sauce, and roasted red pepper.

Flavourful and intense on the palate, with excellent typicity and notes of smooth tobacco and graphite on the finish.

Balanced texture with firm, sweet tannins and refreshing acidity that foretells its excellent cellaring potential.

The spicy blackberry aroma has an herbal edge and is lifted by a hint of lemony oak, while this is racy and not the least bit lazy or heavy. Tomatoey plum, berry, peppery spice, chocolate and licorice flavors span a wide spectrum, while this is comported and balanced through the finish. If you like honest Carmenère, this is for you. Drink through 2024.

I had not tasted the Carmenere from the Max vineyards for a while until they presented the still-unbottled 2018 Max Reserva Carmenere. The grapes were hand picked early in the morning and went through a sorting table before being crushed and put in stainless steel to ferment. The wine matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new. It's intensely herbal and spicy, varietal and defined, with clean aromas and focused flavors. The palate is juicy and tender, with moderate acidity and a soft mouthfeel.Barrel Sample: 89-90

Deep, ripe and loamy, offering flavors of roasted plum, mocha and blackberry that lengthen out nicely. Creamy midpalate, with chocolate and spice details. Drink now through 2020.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 90 Points (2013)

Opaque ruby. Smoky cherry, cassis and dried rose on the pungent nose. A suggestion of mint comes up with air and adds an edge to the wine's fleshy dark fruit flavors. Dusty tannins give shape to the finish, which lingers with very good spicy persistence. I'd have guessed that there was some Cabernet in here.
