Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2014)
This lively red shows good density and balance. Red fruit flavors are deepened by licorice, mineral and toast notes, while firm tannins and crisp acidity give structure. Expressive. Drink now through 2028.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2014)
The 2014 Aalto is produced with Tempranillo from different zones of Ribera del Duero aged in oak barrels, some 70% of them new, for 16 months, a little bit less than in previous years when the wine was aged for some 18 months. They now use some grapes from new vineyards they started planting in the year 2000. The nose has plenty of black fruit, with something earthy, including hints of graphite and lead pencil. It has a classical, somehow Bordelaise, profile with sweet spices and cedar wood; it's ripe without excess. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with good balance, in an XL style, as the wine hits the scales at 15% alcohol. The tannins are very polished, with some grainy texture and good freshness. This is ready now and should also be able to age nicely in bottle, set to be a commercial success, with the typical Aalto profile. 260,000 bottles produced.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) (AG) : 92 Points (2013)
Deep ruby. Spicy, highly perfumed aromas of raspberry, fresh flowers and allspice, with a smoky overtone. Juicy, penetrating red berry, cherry-cola, spicecake and floral pastille flavors show very good energy, with zesty acidity providing lift. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the sexy floral finish. On the delicate side for Aalto--and likely to be approachable soon. This wine went though malo in large French oak vats and was then aged for 20 months in barriques, about a third of them new French (it's normally 50% new) and the rest used French and American.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17+ Points (2013)
Ripe, dark and savoury, some notes of char. More elderberry than cassis. Very firm and dry but with some vanilla on the finish, which seems slightly at odds with the savoury overall impression. Plenty of oak spice but the savoury Ribera style still shows through.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2012)
#6 Wine Spectator TOP 100 2015 - This red shows focus and density, with rich flavors of plum, blackberry, cocoa, licorice and mineral. The structure is muscular but graceful, featuring ripe fruit complemented by savory notes that keep this balanced and fresh. Best from 2016 through 2032.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2012)
There's purity and transparency in this red. Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and flowers. Full-bodied and layered with soft and velvety tannins. Very long and delicious. Drink now.
