Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 97 Points (2017)
A late April frost in 2017 was followed by drought conditions from June until harvest, cutting yields at Massolino and, in the case of Parafada, reducing production from the usual 7,000 bottles to less than 5,000. Grab some of those bottles if you can. The 2017 Parafada is one of the wines of the vintage, its red-cherry flavors perfectly ripe, the acidity fresh and taut, the tannins firm and polished. There’s no trace of dried or overripe fruit here, the 55-year- old vines reaching into Parafada’s limestone soils to find water reserves from the abundant snows of the previous winter. Since the 2016 vintage, Franco Massolino has fermented his Barolos in large Garbellotto casks rather than in cement, allowing for longer and slower fermentations at lower temperatures to retain the delicate aromas of bright cherry and fresh florals that are expressed so beautifully in this wine.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)
Forest floor, grilled herb, iris and camphor aromas appear in the glass. Combining structure and finesse, the firm palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, baking spice and licorice alongside tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Best after 2025.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2017)
Expressive, this Barolo evokes macerated plum, cherry, rose hip and chalky mineral flavors. Fresh and firm, with a long, energetic finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2017)
The Massolino 2017 Barolo Parafada draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba (where this winery is located) and is often the most muscular and brawny wine in this portfolio. That is not necessarily true in the 2017 vintage that sees extra richness and concentration across the board. Morello cherry and dried blackberry are followed by tarry spice, sweet hazelnut paste and a rusty mineral note of iron ore. For sure, this vintage draws out the sweeter and softer side of Parafada.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2015)
A moody nose with deep blue flowers - roses and violets - and blue plums, as well as a glossy, black stony edge. The nose is incredibly alluring. The palate has a very concise, sturdy and deep core of flavors that follow the aromas into blue-plum territory. Plush, long and commanding tannins. Style and grace. Try from 2023.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2015)
Known for its Vigna Rionda bottling, Massolino emerges in this vintage with Parafada leading the way. This cru in Serralunga typically shows some roughness when young, yet the warm vintage and the great work of the winery are able to compensate here. It is ruby in colour and extremely youthful in the glass, with fresh red cassis and pomegranate aromas and flavours. It develops with a slightly rustic, veracious character: some graininess on the palate and austere on the finish, with an amazing savouriness. Drinking Window 2022 - 2050

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2014)
Playing true to type, the 2014 Barolo Parafada is a bit more powerful and dense through the middle than the other Serralunga Barolos in the range. Deep and concentrated - especially in the context of the year - the Parafada presents an intriguing mélange of sweet tobacco, mint, dried cherry and underbrush nuances before the firm, sinewy Serralunga tannins make their presence known. The Parafada is not as refined as the other wines in the lineup, but it has a certain immediacy that is undeniably appealing. I would give it a few years to unwind. (AG) (2/2018)
