The name "Gravascal" is a blend of "gravas" (gravel) and "cal" (lime), referencing the soil composition of this particular plot, which is covered with round alluvial rocks and layers of limestone, enhancing the wine's mineral qualities.
Region and Vineyards: Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal is sourced from a special plot within the Piedra Infinita vineyard in Paraje Altamira, San Carlos, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 1100 meters (3609 feet) above sea level, and the soil is alluvial in origin, with a surface layer of medium-textured sand and silt. Beneath this, there is a layer of medium to large granite gravel coated with calcium carbonate. This unique soil profile contributes to the wine’s distinctive character.
Winemaking Process: The wine is fermented in concrete tanks using native yeasts, highlighting the purity and minerality of the grapes. The wine is then aged in 500-liter oak barrels and concrete vats, which preserves the fruit character while adding complexity.
Tasting Notes:
- Color: Deep, bright ruby.
- Aroma: The nose is complex and brooding, with layers of violets, blueberries, dried herbs, and graphite.
- Palate: Full-bodied and vibrant, the wine offers flavors of dark cherries, blueberries, and minerals. The texture is chalky and the tannins are fine and polished, leading to a long and intellectual finish.
Wine Pairing Ideas: This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, such as steak or lamb, and robust dishes like beef stew or mushroom risotto. It also complements aged cheeses and charcuterie.
