Richer in soil and gentler in slope than Loosen’s other vineyards, Bernkasteler Lay produces some of his most welcoming wines. This 2018 is a fine example, the lemony fruit round and honeyed, yet carried with a clarifying acidity. It’s delicate even as it lasts on a lemon-blossom note.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2018)

Site-typical scents of apple, lime and cherry are garlanded in apple and cherry blossoms. The polished, buoyant palate exhibits all of the bright juiciness, piquancy and profuse inner-mouth perfume that the nose seemed to promise. The stone-lined finish is animating and consummately refreshing, with supportive and by no means excessive sweetness. This wine’s brightness and animation – relatively uncommon virtues in 2018 – reflect a healthy 7.9 total acidity “which, given its low pH, tastes more like 8.9,” noted Schug. Drinking window: 2020 - 2030

Elegant, combining piercing acidity with mineral and fruit elements, showing great tension. Notes of clementine, peach and mint complement one another, offering hints of sea salt on the long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2027.

Very fresh apple and cassis character with wonderful freshness. A long, crisp finish. Screw cap. A long, crisp finish with pronounced minerality and a discrete hint of grape sweetness.

Shards of crushed mineral and spice add complexity to hits of lime soda and honey in this electric off-dry kabinett. Its citrus flavors are intensely concentrated, highlighted by spine-tingling acidity and a lip-smacking honey finish. Enjoy now–2028.

Loosen's 2016 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett (AP 26 17) is pure and fresh, still pretty reductive but already stimulating on the nose. Lush and piquant on the lithe and juicy palate, this is a lovely salty and grippy Riesling, a picture-book Kabinett that was harvested below 83° Oechsle. 8% alcohol.
