Each of the different parcels were picked on their merit. Fermentation started after 2-3 days and continued for 4-5 days. The cap was plunged 2-3 times a day to extract colour and tannin from the skins. The wine was then pressed and settled before being placed into French oak barriques, where malolactic fermentation took place, prior to filtration and bottling.

Enticing warmer season aromas of ripe plum, red cherry and Christmas cake spice. Dried fruit aromas build with some savoury notes after the wine has been opened for several hours. The aromas are continued on the palate accompanied by the softness of silky tannins, fine acidity and spiced fruit cake characters, matched with clove and ripe plum. The finish lingers with natural acidity giving freshness.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2020)
Aromatic, perfumed lift of florals and spices. Red cherries, plum, liquorice, coffee and wood cask flavours, blend into a multi-layered wine.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2017)
Fresh, with ripe strawberry and raspberry flavors, accented by dried lavender, matcha green tea, forest floor and white pepper details, set on a supple, smooth frame. Drink now through 2029.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2016)
Very impressive and sappy cherries in a deliciously fresh and gently reductive mode. Some oak spices with gently meaty and earthy complexity. A terrific, lithe and juicy palate. Elegant with some real pop and punch. This has an impressive structure, showcasing a beautifully rendered set of tannins.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2015)
Peter Caldwell blends this wine from his estate vineyards, one in Pipers River, the other in the Coal River Valley, along with fruit from a third site in Upper Derwent. It’s more a delicious cold-coast red wine than a pinot noir, with the crunch of fresh black-cherry skin, the salt of black olives and the spice of cumin and coriander. An Antarctic chill runs through the wine, keeping it fresh. Serve it with grilled octopus.

Aromas of bright cherry and red berry with hints of cool climate cranberry framed in whips of smoky peat hearth fire. Flavours are bright, with firm acid structure supporting the same fruit tones perceptible in the aroma—very persistent! Finish lingers with long, late acid backbone carrying the red berry late into the aftertaste.
