Aromas and flavours run the gamut from plum, blackberry and dark chocolate to hints of liquorice, star-anise and black olive.

The wine is tight, yet succulent and juicy. The Merlot and Cabernet are revealed in an earthy complexity and the long, driven finish.

Ata Rangi is owned and run by Clive Paton and his wife Phyll, together with Clive’s sister Alison and winemaker Helen Masters. Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16.5 Points (2009)
Tasted 24 Jan 2012. 50% Syrah, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Nourishing, well-balanced red. Very clean and refreshing and brisk but satisfying too. Clever! When to drink : 2012 to 2018.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2006)
The 2006 Celebre (92 points) is even better [than the 2005] with an intense nose of wild strawberry and wild mint infused with touches of dried orange peel, the palate medium-bodied with superb definition with notes of game, leather and spice leading towards a lush, savory-tinged finish.

This wine is a bolder style than Ata Rangi's flagship Pinot Noir. The nose has rich, spicy aromas with a hint of manuka flower. On the palate, velvety tannins are supported by savoury flavours with a juicy and complex finish.

The deep alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terraces and a blend of clones grown in a very sheltered spot produce this classic example of New World Pinot.

Slate, smoke, herbs and complex mineral notes dominate the nose, while on the palate there’s a wonderful finesse to the cool apple and red berry flavours. Linear, fine, complex and slate driven. A grown up Kabinett.
