Solaia was first produced in the 1970s by Marchesi Antinori, a pioneering Tuscan winery, as an experiment in blending Bordeaux grape varieties with Sangiovese. The wine quickly gained recognition for its exceptional quality and became a flagship wine for the Antinori estate.
Wine region: Tuscany, Italy. Tuscany is one of Italy's most renowned wine regions, famous for its Sangiovese-based wines like Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. Solaia, however, is a Super Tuscan wine, meaning it blends international grape varieties with indigenous grapes and is not restricted by the regulations of any specific DOC or DOCG.
Vineyards: The grapes for Solaia 2020 come from vineyards located in the renowned Bolgheri sub-region of Tuscany. This area boasts a unique terroir with well-drained, gravelly soils and a Mediterranean climate with cool breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea. These factors contribute to the elegance and power of the wines produced here.
Grape varietals: Solaia 2020 is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), with Cabernet Franc (20%) and Sangiovese (10%) completing the mix. This combination offers the structured elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by the warmth and spice of Sangiovese and the intriguing herbal notes of Cabernet Franc.
Winemaking: Antinori adheres to meticulous winemaking practices. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the final blend. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging for 18 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels.
Tasting notes: The Antinori Solaia 2020 boasts a deep ruby red color. The nose opens with a complex and captivating bouquet of aromas. Dark fruit notes like blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum mingle with hints of blueberry and cherry. Floral nuances of violets and roses add a touch of elegance, while subtle spice notes of black pepper and licorice add complexity. The palate is full-bodied with a firm structure of well-integrated tannins. The flavors echo the aromas, with a core of dark fruit complemented by hints of earth, tobacco, and leather. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression.
Food pairing: The Antinori Solaia 2020 pairs well with richly flavored dishes such as:
- Grilled steaks and lamb chops
- Braised short ribs
- Wild mushroom risotto
- Aged hard cheeses
Due to its structure and potential for aging, this wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for up to 15 years or more.
