The wine has a wonderful viscosity, mouth coating and pleasantly creamy, but with an exciting streak of minerally acidity that leaves us wanting more.

This is made from the Chardonnay grape variety. This is one of the grapes which is often made using oak barrels. This gives the wine oaky, vanilla notes which combine with the rich pineapple and citrus flavours of the wine. A complex and flavoursome wine.

Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyards in Mendoza in 1902. Malbec had been a blending grape in Bordeaux, but Nicola suspected it would find its hidden splendor in the Argentine Andes. The creamy and mellow 2020 Catena Alta Chardonnay comes from a warmer year, and the wine shows it. It still has moderate alcohol (13.6%) and ripeness and keeps the balance and poise, but the oak is a little more noticeable than in the 2021 I tasted next to it.

Ripe peach, dried mango, dried jasmine and buttered toast. It’s full-bodied with crisp acidity. Concentrated layers of ripe and dried fruit and a vivid, subtly smoky finish. Drink or hold.

The excellent, subtle and elegant 2018 Catena Alta Chardonnay had a shy nose that took some time in the glass to take off. It's more subtle than in-your-face, and the palate is super elegant, with much better integrated oak than previous vintages. There is great freshness and very good acidity that comes through as pure, crystalline and focused, with a mineral mouthfeel. Rating: 92+

Bright yellow-green. Precise aromas of white peach, citrus fruits and flowers. Rich, suave and smooth, offering noteworthy purity and breadth to its white fruit and mineral flavors. Plusher and rounder than the 2016 but maintains a light touch and finishes with excellent subtle persistence. This is easier to taste today than the 2016. (ST) (7/2019)

The 2016 Chardonnay Catena Alta is a richer, full-bodied, toasty effort that has serious upfront appeal. This cuvée comes from the Adrianna and Domingo Vineyards and was barrel fermented, with only a portion going through malolactic fermentation. It spent 12-16 months in a mix of new and used barrel before bottling. Beautiful notes of caramelized apples, brioche, honeysuckle, and buttered tropical fruits all emerge from this nicely balanced, textured, and high-quality Chardonnay that opens up nicely with time in the glass. It’s terrific today and I suspect best enjoyed over the coming 2-4 years.

A rich yellow color and intensely woody aromas of sawmill smoke and barrel spice lead to a fleshy, full and oily palate. This wine tastes heavily of oak and related resin. The fruit character is not a big factor on either the palate or the finish.
