I might be getting older, but is this really the 25th vintage of the Southern Right Pinotage? If so, it’s one of the best yet. Part of what Emul Ross calls the “Pinotage renaissance”, it’s a bright, subtle, red-fruited number with minimal oak, silky tannins and just a hint of supporting oak.

Robert Parker (RP) : 88 Points (2019)
The 2019 Pinotage opens with a nose of black cherry skin, bitter black tea, soft volatility, hints of white peppercorn and touches of leather in crushed autumn leaves and tar. Medium-bodied, the wine offers a sweet frame and flavors of dried hay and fried savory herbs, with a mineral tension and green tobacco notes. Tight tannins linger on the food-friendly and mineral finish. The wine rested for nine months in 15% new French oak before being bottled. 13,848 bottles were made.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 91 Points (2015)
Ripe boysenberry, blackberry and cherry tones are accented by hints of game, licorice root and lemon oil in this well-balanced and accessible Pinotage. The palate is smooth and plush, with well-integrated tannins and enough acidity to balance the opulent fruit flavors. Editors' Choice

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2015)
Offers a bright purity uncommon for the grape, offering a beam of cassis and boysenberry fruit lined with violet, licorice and blood orange hints. Features a fresh finish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2013)
May/June '15 by Stephen Tanzer - Healthy red-ruby color. Sexy, slightly smoky aromas of dark raspberry, cherry, meat and minerals; this struck me as midway between Pinot Noir and Syrah. Rich, vinous and refined, with brisk acidity giving punch and lift to the savory dark fruit and spice flavors. A Pinotage with terrific verve and primary fruit character but also plenty of earthy, minerally complexity to give it another dimension. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and noteworthy energy. With its exhilarating push-pull of sweetness and acidity, this wine still requires a few years in bottle to harmonize completely
