Perez left the family business in 2001 and launched the Ultreia range in 2005, with rapid success. As a result of the demand, he says, ‘I did not want to put up prices, so I started the Vizcaína project that wasn't parcel-based and could supply greater volumes.’ He selected four of his family's vineyards that he most liked. The 0.9ha La Vitoriana is the oldest (130 years, own rootstocks) and the most complex. Shaped like a halfpipe in profile, it has three different orientations. The facing slopes are only separated by 80m but harvest takes place two weeks apart. The wine, a Mencia field blend, has lightly smoky aromas with light cherry fruit. On the palate there's a delicate, fine texture to the tannins and a long, elegant finish. Drinking Window 2019 – 2024

Growing at 1,870 feet in Valtuille de Abajo, La Vitoriana is one of the oldest vineyards in Bierzo. Raúl Pérez has records of its planting in 1890. As a young wine, this accents its funky notes, with some feral scents, earthiness and raw meat underscoring the black fruit flavors. The structure is tight and firm, creating a compact block of flavor that’s just waiting for grilled lamb. This wine will take years to fully grow into its complexity. Cellar it for five years, or go for that lamb.

My favorite red of the 2014 vintage was the 2014 La Vizcaína La Vitoriana, which was very expressive, floral and elegant, with filigree and detail. There is a lot of depth in the palate, greatly balanced with very fine tannins and a long, tasty finish. This is the oldest vineyard they have, and Raúl Pérez told me the vineyard is not an easy one: very good in some years, not so good in others. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April, the latest bottling, as it needs a long aging after a three-month maceration.
