Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 96 Points (2018)
From a majority of estate-grown grapes and percentage of grower fruit, this impressive wine is juicy, textured, layered and lengthy. With a cool-climate crispness at its foundation, it unfurls lovely flavors of dark plum, wild strawberry and orange peel, finishing in a touch of nutmeg

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2018)
Pale ruby-purple, the 2018 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards has alluring aromas of dried lavender and bergamot, aniseed, blood orange and amaro-like accents with a core of perfectly ripe red and black berry fruits. The palate is light-bodied, silky, soft and juicy but packed with nuanced flavor layers, and it finishes incredibly long. What an elegant, layered expression this vintage! This was aged 13 months in 39% new French oak.

Connoisseurs' Guide (CG) : 91 Points (2018)
Vitality, brightness and very keen fruity precision rather than heady ripeness have for long been the hallmarks of Phelps’s Freestone Pinots, and, if those virtues are once again on display in this outing, the 2018 edition ups the ante a touch in terms of juicy, optimally ripened fruit. It displays an extra bit of richness and range that, combined with its typically firm and lively balance, guarantee many years of positive growth ahead. Enjoy it while still young for its vigor and verve, but know that appreciably more complexity awaits.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2017)
Lots of blueberries, blackberries and slate on the nose. Medium-bodied, integrated and tight. Refined and driven. (3/2019)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2017)
The 2017 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards is soft, supple and super-expressive. It offers dark cherry, plum, spice, leather and menthol on the nose, while bright red cherry, rose petal, mint and blood orange flavors are beautifully layered. The 20% whole clusters add aromatic nuance without overpowering the wine. The blend is 51% Quarter Moon and 49% Pastorale. (AG) (5/2019)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 93 Points (2017)
Leading off the Pinot Noirs, the 2017 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards comes from a handful of sites and spent 13 months in one-third new French oak. Mostly destemmed (80%), its ruby hue is followed by a beautiful bouquet of cranberries, caramelized cherries, orange rind, and spicy aromas and flavors. It's nicely textured, balanced, has good acidity, and a great finish. (1/2020)

Burghound (BH) : 91 Points (2017)
A discreet but quite pretty nose grudgingly offers up notes of red raspberry, plum and violet nuances. The delicious, round and appealingly textured medium weight flavors possess a relatively sophisticated palate impression thanks primarily to the fine-grained tannins that also shape the moderately firm, dusty and balanced finale. This has the stuff to reward mid-term cellaring and is a wine that will need at least a few years. *Outstanding* (10/2019)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2016)
In 2000 and 2001, the Phelps family planted two vineyards in Freestone, eight miles from the Pacific coast. The two sites, Pastorale and Quarter Moon, contribute equally to this estate-grown pinot noir; both are planted on Goldridge soil, a well-drained sandy loam over sandstone, the remnants of an inland sea. The vines deliver a wine that’s fresh, with crisp lines. Spicy green edges in the tannins keep it firm and tight, then it ends on notes of cranberries and cool hints of jasmine.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 88 Points (2012)
Stubbornly tannic and chewy, with dried dark berry, dried herb, cedar and underbrush notes. A ruggedly textured wine that needs time. Drink now through 2025. 9,375 cases made.
