Vat 1 Hunter Semillon epitomised the benefits of patient bottle ageing that transforms this unoaked wine into a masterpiece.

First produced in 1963, the Vat 1 is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks before it quietly spends a few years 'resting' in bottles.

It is a classic Hunter Valley semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is only just beginning to evolve and show a hint of toasty, bottle aged complexity.

2016 wasn’t hailed as a particularly great vintage, but, seven years in, this wine, from the historic winery’s best old blocks, is singing. A heady, layered perfume of citrus pith, dried herb, beeswax, wool, flint and orchard blossom leads to a palate that’s uniquely textured, like chalk dust swirled into melted wax and lifted by mouthwatering acidity. Bright, prickly lemon peel lingers on the long, slippery finish. Both delicate and powerful, it drinks beautifully now, but also has a long life ahead

There's a wow factor to this wine, the way in which it manages to harness such impressive power and concentration and deliver it in such smooth, seamless and tubular shape is a thing to marvel at. Aromas of gently flinty lime and lemon fruits lead to flavorus of the same ilk, really astonishingly pure, long and polished, green apple flavor s close it out fresh and bright. Drink now or age, superb.

From old, dry-grown vineyards dating as far back as '23, hand picking and sorting eliminated botrytis, leaving a pure display of citrus fruits headed by lemon, with lime and grapefruit also in the mix, all framed by hallmark acidity. A wine in its infancy, its best years a long way into the next decade and beyond. (10/2016)

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 93 Points (2015)

Light, bright yellow colour, with a quite complex bouquet showing straw, dried herbs and the beginnings of toast. There is good intensity of flavour and the palate is full and complete, with sprightly acidity but also power and richness. The finish is long. A very good Vat 1. All it needs is time. (10/2020)

A succulent, waxy mix of lemon curd, resin, lanolin and Key lime flavors with a thread of saline and touches of honey and spice. Intense and vibrant, with a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2030.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93+ Points (2013)

The 2013 Vat 1 Semillon opens with pretty aromas of fresh apple, pears and lemon peel on the nose. Slightly tropical in the mouth, it is dry, light-bodied and endowed with tons of flavor, great ripeness and a crisp acid line yet the wine remains approachable and nicely textured through the long and apple-laced finish.

Decanter (DCT) : 98 Points (2011)

This vintage of Vat 1 has stupendous acidity and rigid structure, but still with an awesome depth. It's so measured you want to applaud in appreciation.
