More information on wine critics and ratings

Grapes were primarily estate-grown from vineyards in Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Aggressive hand canopy management was maintained with a green harvest, weak shoot removal and veraison thinning performed to ensure even ripening.

Vinification: Harvest took place by hand between the 19th of September and the 13th of October. The grapes were punched down by hand in small open-top fermenters.. Fermentation on the skins lasted nine days. The wine was barrel aged for 14 months in 100% French oak (20% of which were new barrels).

Tasting Notes: Deeply perfumed aromas of dark berries and old vine Zinfandel’s woody spiciness. Layered bright fruit flavours reminiscent of a rich berry pie with a toasted crust. A vibrant acidity and balanced tannins thanks to low yields in the vineyard which continue through the long, persistent finish.

The Seghesio Zinfandels have been scooping Gold medals and Trophies in the Decanter Awards and International Wine Challenge for a number of years now, proving to an international market that their Zins not only measure up to the competition, but are in the top rank. Now owned by Crimson Wine Group, whose primary focus is on estate-grown wines from some of California and Oregon's most prestigious producers, Seghesio remains focused on its family roots, with Pete overseeing viticulture and… Read more

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2021)
That rare Zinfandel with finesse and briary fruit, offering wild berry, mocha and black licorice flavors that gather richness and zest toward lively tannins.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 91 Points (2021)
The 2021 Zinfandel Old Vine offers up loads of scorched earth, cedar and plum, and on the palate, it reveals a bit of mixed berry fruit, with pressed red flowers and dusty earth. Juicy and inviting, with ripe tannins, this has a lot of immediate charm to drink over the next few years.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2018)
Expressive red fruit, toasted cumin and spice nose. Riper palate with gamey flavours and fruit continuing on the finish. A fine wine. Blend : 87% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah, 4% Alicante Bouschet

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2018)
This is a robustly rich and ripe wine bursting in blackberry fruit, thick tannin and prominent oak. Hints of dried herb provide a complementary contrast, with 9% Petite Sirah and 4% Alicante Bouschet adding to the intensity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2016)
The 2016 Zinfandel Old Vine has an open nose of red berry preserves, warm blackberries and stone fruit hints with layers of cinnamon stick, sweet spices, charcuterie, garrigue, turned earth and dried violet. The palate is medium to full-bodied, intense and spicy with a firm frame and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and layered. This merits another couple of years in bottle. 1,429 cases produced. Rating: 93+

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2015)
There’s a rich and convincing air to the nose with ripe red and dark berries, nicely threaded with toasty and spicy-oak influence. The palate has a very smooth and defined feel with impressive tannin grain and a long, even-paced finish. 92% zinfandel, 7% petite sirah and 1% alicante bouschet. (9/2019)
