Made from 100% Nebbiolo, this wine was first bottled in 1987. The vines are planted in the Cerequio vineyard at a density of 1,620 plants per acre, and the grapes are harvested in late September. The wine is aged in a combination of 1/3 new and 2/3 used French oak barriques for two years, and it is refined for one year before being cellared for one additional year in bottle.

Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red in color, with garnet hues. Fresh and complex aromas of macerated cherries, plums, dried roses, minerals and spices surround a terrific concentration and depth. This Barolo is creamy and broad, racy and refined. The flavors explode with a supple and persistent roundness. The finish is long and elegant with fine-grained tannins. Fruit is everywhere! This is a masterful Barolo, long-lived and beautiful.

His path to success has been based on what are considered to be the lowest yields of fruit in the Barolo zone. Production is very limited and the winery makes less than 4000 cases per vintage, which equals less than one bottle per vine. He’s a modernist to the extent that he fashions his wine away from the traditional tannic Barolo style, not overly extracted and oaky. This is an Italian cult winery at its finest. Roberto and Gianni Voerzio inherited their holdings from their father… Read more

James Suckling (JS) : 98 Points (2017)
Extremely perfumed and beautiful, offering rose-petal and lavender aromas with some tar to the ripe cherries. Some spice, such as nutmeg, as well as light hazelnut. Fresh. Full-bodied, very tight and compact with firmness and wonderful length and focus. Consistent drive through the center of the wine. Better after 2025. (3/2021)

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2015)
The 2015 Barolo Cerequio shows impressive and firm construction; however, the wine remains delicate and finessed all the while. This is a real stunner with inner fiber that is as strong, but as softly textured, as the highest quality silk. Aromas of wild cherry, violets, licorice and tar are in a tight, nascent state at this young stage. This implies they will blossom with time, coming into focus with greater intensity and complexity as the wine continues its careful bottle aging. This wine shows an evident mineral signature at the back.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 95 Points (2012)
The 2012 Barolo Cerequio is arguably the most complete of these wines, as it brings together aromatic complexity, dense fruit and fabulous balance. All the elements flesh out in a rich, sumptuous Barolo endowed with real power and depth, yet there is plenty of the nuance that distinguishes Cerequio. There are a number of terrific wines in this lineup, but the Cerequio is the wine that seems to be the most dialed in today. With time in the glass, the intensity of both fruit and tannin simply continues to blossom. (AG) (3/2016)
