Deep purple in color, the wine shows elegant gum cistus aromas well integrated with complex notes of fresh spice and wild berry fruit. Balanced on the palate, evolving into a powerful wine that shows red berry fruit flavors, excellent volume and firm, textured tannins. This is an engaging, food-friendly wine, with a fresh, lingering finish.

Winemaking: The grapes, coming from the best Tinta Roriz plot of Quinta do Crasto, are taken to the winery in 22 kg plastic boxes and rigorously inspected on arrival. The grapes are first trodden in a traditional stone tank (lagar) and after this, they are transferred into an open stainless steel tank where the cap is pressed down with robotic pistons. Fermentation takes place for 10 days under strict controlled temperature environment. Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed, the grape are gently pressed using hydraulic presses. Aging: In new French oak barrels.

Maturation: New French oak barrels.

Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines. Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum",… Read more

The 2016 Tinta Roriz was aged in new French oak for 16 to 18 months, depending on the plot (with three vineyards separately fermented). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. For some reason, I missed this in the vertical history of Crasto's Tinta Roriz, so here is a current note on this recent offering.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2016)
In the series of single-variety wines from this producer, this wine is rich, generously and smoothly textured. Tinta Roriz, aka Tempranillo, gives a powerful, concentrated wine, with ripe black fruits and some fine potential. Drink the wine from 2022.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2016)
Refined, featuring ripe raspberry and vivid currant notes woven with cedar, violet and graphite details. Offers firm, integrated tannins, with accents of clove, espresso and wild herb sailing into the long finish. Best from 2021 through 2030.

James Suckling (JS) : 92 Points (2016)
A full-bodied red with aromas of black cherries, dried geraniums, lavender and some cured meat. Smooth, ripe and chewy with slightly wood-soaked tannins. Wonderful depth of blue and black fruit. Chocolate and praline, too. Better after 2022.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16.5+ Points (2012)
Tasted Mar 2015 - Dark ruby with a soft rim. Plenty of sweet spice and vanilla from the oak, with sweet red-cherry fruit underneath, though the vanilla character is a little dominant at this early stage. Strongly sweet vanilla flavours on the palate too, a little too sweet for my taste but it is generous and rich and embryonic and there is lively freshness to bring balance. Firm, chewy tannins, lots to get your teeth into, and a sweet vanilla aftertaste. Some resemblance to young modern Rioja but there is still that dark, savoury quality that marks it out as Douro. Just a touch more aggressive than the Touriga Nacional 2012.Neeeds more time. (JH)

The name “Lion Tamer” has become a nickname for Malbec because we use it as our tannin tamer. Much like a Lion Tamer who uses a deft hand to soothe powerful, instinctive animals, Winemaker Dave Guffy uses Malbec to soothe powerful tannins. This red blend brings all the roar of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, and when blended with Malbec, produces a big, lush wine that finishes with smooth and tamed round tannins.
