Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines shows complex aromas, with well-integrated fruit and oak notes and a hint of spice. Intense and deep on the palate, it is well balanced by the firm structure of the tannins and delivers a long and lingering finish. It is ideal to accompany hearty meat and game dishes. Since it is bottled unfiltered, some sediment may form during bottle ageing.

Winemaking :

  • Grape Varieties: Old vines (mixed plantings with 25 to 30 different grape varieties)
  • Winemaking: Following harvesting from the old vines, the grapes are brought to the winery in 22 kg plastic boxes where they undergo strict selection. After complete destemming and slight crushing, the juice is transferred to temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed, the grape are gently pressed using hydraulic presses.
  • Ageing: About 18 months in French (85%) and American (15%) oak barrels.
Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines. Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum",… Read more

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2020)
A creamy, harmonious red, with a generous range of ripe black plum, black currant, dried mint and dried fig, loamy earth and mineral flavors finely meshed with supple tannins. Long and graceful on the well-spiced finish. Drink now through 2030.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2020)
Dark plums and mulberries here with black cardamom and licorice, as well as nut shell and wet soil. Full and structured with firm tannins, which are chalky and lightly chewy. Deep core of ripe dark berries with a meaty and warm finish, and fine tannins at the end with an attractive earthiness. Old vines, mixed plantings of 25 to 30 different grape varieties. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)
The 2019 Reserva Old Vines (average age of 70 years) was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on vineyard plots, in 65% new (85% French) oak. It comes in at 14.8% alcohol. This represents 38 of Crasto's 42 plots and/or small vineyards of old vines, with Maria Teresa and Vinha da Ponte both bottled separately this year. Dark, deep and rich, this leans to bitter chocolate this year. Like most of these 2019s from Crasto, it adds a serious backbone and demands some cellaring. I tend to put a fairly early "start" date for drinking windows, but that doesn't mean it will be at peak or fully ready. One of the more powerful Old Vines bottlings recently, this should be socked away for a few years. Come back in the middle of the decade for better results. I could say that about all of Crasto's reds in this report. It's a powerful group. There were 90,000 bottles produced, plus some half bottles and large-format bottles.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2017)
This field-blend wine comes from vines that are 70 years old. The wine is still young, showing serious structure and dark tannins. It is already well balanced, the wood flavors and spice contrasting with rich fruits. Best from 2023.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2015)
Heavy bottle. Deep purplish crimson. Even though the wine is so young the aroma is complex, with perfumed dark fruit, some oak sweetness and overlaying it all a fine dusty mineral/graphhite quality that gives it a sense of place – a feeling that it comes from somewhere seriously rocky. On the palate, the oak is still a little dominant at this early stage, giving sweet spice notes, but the tannins are super-frine and give a dry balance and finesse to the whole. Fluid and juicy and fresh to a long, supple finish, the tannins super-fine and smooth. You could just about approach it now with food though it will repay a good few more years in bottle. (JH)
