Winemaking : The grapes, coming from the Douro Superior sub-region, are taken to the winery in plastic boxes and rigorously inspected on arrival. The grapes are then destemmed and pressed. The must is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it remained for 48 hours at 8ºC for decanting. The alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks and the wine is then transferred to French oak barrels where fermentation continues for 45 days at 14ºC. Ageing: 6 months in French oak barrels. Barrels are stored in a rack system with rollers which enables barrels to be rotated to stir the fine lees without the introduction of oxygen. New barrels: 50% / Used barrels: 50%. French oak barrels: 85% | French oak barrels with acacia heads: 15%.

Tasting Notes: Lemon in colour, with light golden hues. Expressive on the nose, with citrus aromas, delicate floral notes and a crispy minerality. The palate starts out fresh, evolving into a finely textured wine that reveals excellent volume, citrus fruit flavours and pleasant mineral sensations. This is an elegant wine, with a lingering finish and a natural acidity that will allow it to evolve positively in the bottle. 60% Viosinho; 40% Verdelho

Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines. Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum",… Read more

The 2020 Branco Superior is a 60/40 blend of Viosinho and Verdelho aged for six months in 50% used French barrels (about 15% of which had acacia heads). It comes in at 12.3% alcohol. This shows its wood a bit too much, although it does have appealing freshness to counter it to some degree. Given my druthers, I think I'd personally prefer the regular Branco in this report, but this does have the edge in mouthfeel and power. It depends on how you use them, as I've said before. This will clearly do better with food. Still, the wood just seems a bit prominent this year, and that didn't get better, perhaps worse, when I allowed it to air out and warm up.

Decanter (DCT) : 91 Points (2017)
Focused lime and grapefruit notes with a creamy, textural palate, an underlying nutty oak core and an orange cordial finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2016)
Full-bodied, with a broad, layered profile offering honey cream, glazed peach and pineapple tart flavors, woven together with vanilla and buttery accents. Viosinho and Verdelho. Drink now through 2021. 2,000 cases made.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2014)
This is a beautifully perfumed, lightly wood-aged wine. With grapes from the Douro Superior, it is rich while remaining impressively fresh. There are apricot and ripe pear flavors that are given a smoky, toasty edge by the wood aging. It is ready to drink.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16.5 Points (2013)
Tasted Mar '15 - Burgundy-shaped bottle. Viosinho and Verdelho vines in the Douro Superior aged 18 years – transitional schist/granite. TA 7.2 g/l, pH just 3.21. RS 2.2 g/l. Fermentation begun in steel but finished, over a total of 45 days, in French oak. Aged 6 months in French oak, 72% new. 15% of the barrels had acacia heads. Sophisticated lightly oaked, creamy aroma – mealy spice and a hint of orange pith. But there is also that acacia aroma that comes so often with acacia honey – almost a sweet smell even thought the wine is dry. Textured, compact green fruits – cedary fresh finish and fine length from both the fruit and the winemaking. Full of flavour but still elegant. Much more substance than the unoaked Crasto white.
