The history of Etna is studded with the historic eruptions which have shaped it. The legendary one of 1614, lasting ten years and the longest ever recorded, halted right on the border of the vineyards of Sciaranuova. A strongly evocative name for our Cru dell’Etna based on Nerello Mascalese. High black lands confer an elegant style, refined and balanced.

Tasting Notes: This 100% Nerello Mascalese from lava sands presents its tasting strength and extraordinary aromas of incense and herbs, hibiscus and wild fennel.

A luminous and lyrical wine which recounts without obstacles the character and refinement of great red mountain wines but at latitudes not far from Africa. The tannins of compact texture are extracted with elegance.

The sweetness and generosity of wild fruits and currants merges with aromas of incense and beeswax and a light almost salty touch invites one to return to one’s glass.

In this edition of 14,000 bottles, the 2018 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is a beautifully elegant and streamlined wine that reflects the precision and careful winemaking that is a hallmark of the Planeta family. This wine opens to fine and nuanced aromas of wild berry, cassis and rose. Etched mineral notes and light spice frame a core of pretty fruit. This is a classic Etna red that can be stretched out to a 10-year drinking window if desired, although there's no reason not to enjoy this bottle straight out of the gate.

As if you can smell the ashen volcanic soils that these vines grow in, the 2018 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 wafts up smoky and musky, with a complement of cherry and dried strawberry that fully completes the experience. This is soft and fleshy in feel, boasting a noticeable inner sweetness nicely balanced by brisk acids and pretty inner florals. The 2018 lacks the persistence and structure to promote long-term cellaring, but makes up for it with sheer drink ability.

A pure and very focused Etna red with aromas of cherries, strawberries, ash, rose petals and rose stems, following through to a full body with firm, chewy tannins and a bright, tightened finish. Shows class and persistence. Drink or hold.

Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Fine and concentrated raspberry with real depth and surprisingly expressive for this hot vintage. Light, fine, stalky raspberry palate with succulent, medium-bodied fruit. Firm tannins creeping up on the finish, betraying the year, but this will remain another year in cask. 14% but so lithe and yet powerful. 17+/20 points. (WS) (4/2018)

Tasting Note: Vibrant Sicilian white wine from volcanic soil, rounded, fruity and perfumed with yellow plums, white stone fruit and herbs.

Food Matching: A white wine for all seasons. Good as an aperitif, but excellent with starters based on fish and pasta.

Vinification: The grapes are picked into crates and are at once refrigerated at 8°C. After light crushing and destemming they are soft pressed. The decanted must is racked and inoculated with yeasts then ferments at 15°C for 20 days. The wine thus obtained remains on the lees until February with continuous mixing. 10% of the must is fermented in barriques. The wine is then matured in stainless steel tanks and Allier oak 225 litre barriques.
