Vineyards:

Fruit for this Barolo was sourced from the 1.3 hectare Parussi vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, situated at an altitude of 300 metres above sea level. Purchased in 2007, this is Massolino's first vineyard outside of Serralunga d'Alba. The excellent south-easterly/south-westerly exposure of the vineyard, situated on the crest of the hill, guarantees the production of excellent quality grapes. Soil is predominantly calcareous clay and sand. Deeper and richer in sandy components than that of Serralunga d'Alba, it conveys remarkable elegance and mineral notes combined with silky tannins. The vines are Guyot-trained and are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. The average age of the vines is 40 years old. The average yield is 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

Vinification:

Fermentation and maceration lasted approximately 15-20 days at temperatures between 31-33ºC. The wine was matured in large oak casks for 30 months followed by a year in bottle before release.

Tasting notes:

Rich, deep garnet in colour. Balsamic aromas on the nose, with hints of earth and red fruits. A vigorous, powerful and deep wine, with young tannins - a remarkable expression of its site.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 97 Points (2019)
The 2019 Barolo Parussi is Massolino's sole Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. A wine of total grace and refinement, the 2019 is pure seduction. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berry fruit, orange peel and rose petal soar out of the glass. Readers will find an elegant, sublime Barolo that hits all the right notes. Don't miss it.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)
The Massolino 2019 Barolo Parussi (with 9,000 bottles made) has dark fruit and savory spice that make for a very firm and compact wine. This is an upfront and quite muscular expression with fruit from one of the northernmost sites in Castiglione Falletto. There is some firmness to the tannins that will require more aging time. This wine is set to hit the market in the fall of 2023.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2019)
Fully focused on restrained root aromas such as rhubarb and liquorice, wrapped up in sweet violet, rose. red currants and pomegranate, this 2019 is quite austere, with good concentration of blood orange on the finish, yet thick, dusty and austere tannins. It will evolve with its sternness. The wine ages for 30 months in large Slavonian oak.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2019)
Very pretty with pure and fresh fruit and focused tannins. Medium- to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a bright and vivid finish. Shows tension and brightness. Flowers and sliced strawberries at the end.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 95 Points (2017)
Sourced from a 1.3-hectare parcel of Parussi in Castiglione Falletto, the 2017 Barolo Parussi is fresh with chalky mineral earth, red cherry, dried roses, and cedar. Ripe and vibrant, with dried raspberry leather, apricot, and sweet herbs, there are powerful tannins that balance the fruit. These are wines that need time to show their true potential and I think will be worth the wait. (5/2021)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2017)
A wine that is tightly stitched together. Sour cherry with a hint of cardamom pod and fantastic depth. Succulent, concentrated, yet not sweet. Cherry fruit on the palate with long, coating tannins. You won't be disappointed if you open the bottle now but ideally, it should be given the chance to age a little more. 17/20 points (WS) (11/2020)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2016)
Plum, black cherry and floral notes are framed by cigar box, eucalyptus, tar and iron in this intense, smoldering red. Right now it's a struggle between the expressive fruit and muscular tannins, so give it a decade at least before pulling the cork. Best from 2025 through 2050.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2016)
Pipe-tobacco, scorched earth and underbrush aromas mingle with whiffs of camphor and dark-skinned berry on this full-bodied red. It's firmly structured, featuring raspberry compote and licorice flavors framed in assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish. Youthfully austere and tightly wound, it needs several more years to fully integrate.Cellar Selection

The “Vigna Rionda” vineyard is in one of the best positions in Serralunga: when Giovanni and Renato Massolino decided to buy it, they exchanged it for a larger vineyard. It produces a powerful, concentrated wine, suitable for long ageing.

Franco Massolino has done a wonderful job of marrying change with a respect for tradition. Grapes are sourced from several vineyards in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba, from up to 60-year old vines, resulting in structured, robust and long-lived Barolos.
