Robert Parker (RP) : 94+ Points (2020)
Clocking in with 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and splashes of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Paul Sauer begins with aromas of dusty red fruit, blackberry compote, cedar and juicy tobacco with plenty of attractive oak. Medium-bodied and with 13.5% alcohol, the palate is firm, fresh and layered with turned earth, pencil lead and oak spices before displaying a balanced structure with firm gripping tannins that will need another year or two in the bottle to settle. Just over 40,000 bottles were produced after the wine rested in 100% new French oak for about two years.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2019)
An aromatic nose introduces aromas of cherry, grenadine, raspberry and vanilla bean. This wine has a good amount of berries mixed with light notes of nutmeg. It’s well structured, with high acidity and firm tannins suggesting good aging potential. The fresh texture balances barrel-driven flavors in the persistent finish.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2018)
The 2018 Paul Sauer is backward, almost surly on the nose and needs a few minutes to really find its voice, offering blackberry, raspberry coulis, aniseed and light floral scents. The oak is very well integrated here. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and one of the most sensual I can recall in recent years. Suave and sophisticated, this is Cape wine from the top drawer.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2017)
A rich and toasty full-bodied red, displaying mouthwatering acidity, a backbone for the melted licorice- and dried sage-infused flavors of sappy blackberry coulis and crème de cassis fruit. Amped up and expressive in all the right ways, with just enough restraint and definition to keep it from being flamboyant. Sculpted tannins firm the well-spiced finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2030. 3,500 cases made, 120 cases imported.

Tim Atkin (TA) : 100 Points (2015)
A great wine, with a distinguished track record in one of the best-ever Cape vintages: if any South African wine deserves 100 points, and I strongly believe that it does, then it is the brilliant 2015 Paul Sauer, one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted. Cabernet Sauvignon-based with 15% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this is intense, refined and well balanced, with seamless tannins and structure and beautifully integrated new oak. Bravo Kanonkop! Bravo South Africa! 2023-35.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2015)
A pronounced but very vivid nose of blackberries, dried mint, eucalyptus, chamomile, light mulberries and baking spices. Full body, ripe yet very structured tannins and a fine streak of acidity. A long, chewy finish. Drink in 2021. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc.

Decanter (DCT) : 90 Points (2015)
Oz Clarke: This has good mid-weight, it’s ripe, quite soft with a creamy oak and Merlot influence. It’s modern and attractive - needs 2 - 4 years. Sarah Jane Evans MW: This has plenty of rich fruit underneath, but the weight of oak does obscure the best of the palate. It has dry tannins with a hint of spice. Tina Gellie: This is big, deep and dense with a round, creamy black fruit nose. It’s youthful still with notes of old world oak treatment. Recommended by Fiona McDonald. Drinking Window 2019 - 2023

Citrus peel, white flowers, stone fruit and gooseberry dominate the graceful aromatic arc, delicate and bright fruit nuances on the palate, dry, fresh and pure with more yellow fruit and great acidity to match leading to a mineral and slightly spicy finish.
