More information on wine critics and ratings

A complex, textural Pinot Noir that offers aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and tea leaves, along with a tangerine brightness that expresses the wine’s coastal origins.

The palate is generous yet finely structured, with good capacity to age.

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2019)
The 2019 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards takes time to open, metamorphosing from iron and woodsmoke to raspberries, dried flowers, dark spices and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is silky and seamlessly fresh, loaded with perfectly ripe, earth-laced fruits whose flavors linger for a very long time in the mouth. This has the fruit intensity and structure to age very well in bottle.

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2019)
Blueberry and spice with lightly toasted notes and some nuts. Full, yet very tight, with refined tannins and polish. Linear and long. Intense and vivid. A beauty. This needs time to open. Try after 2022.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2019)
Lastly, the 2019 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards reveals a medium ruby, semi-opaque hue to go with stunning notes of ripe black cherries, black tea, spice, and a distinct, racy, reductive, mineral nuance that builds with time in the glass. Beautifully textured, nicely structured, and balanced, it's going to cruise for 5-7 years, if not over a decade, in cold cellars.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2019)
Savory forest-floor tones contrast well against crisp, focused flavors of blood orange, pomegranate and cherry. With length and breadth, it is structured yet expansive, with and immensely delicious palate.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2019)
Well-knit, with fresh spiciness to raspberry and cherry tart flavors that are flanked by hot stone accents. Finishes with slate notes and plenty of creaminess. Drink now through 2025.

Connoisseurs' Guide (CG) : 91 Points (2018)
Vitality, brightness and very keen fruity precision rather than heady ripeness have for long been the hallmarks of Phelps’s Freestone Pinots, and, if those virtues are once again on display in this outing, the 2018 edition ups the ante a touch in terms of juicy, optimally ripened fruit. It displays an extra bit of richness and range that, combined with its typically firm and lively balance, guarantee many years of positive growth ahead. Enjoy it while still young for its vigor and verve, but know that appreciably more complexity awaits.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2017)
The 2017 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards is soft, supple and super-expressive. It offers dark cherry, plum, spice, leather and menthol on the nose, while bright red cherry, rose petal, mint and blood orange flavors are beautifully layered. The 20% whole clusters add aromatic nuance without overpowering the wine. The blend is 51% Quarter Moon and 49% Pastorale. (AG) (5/2019)

Burghound (BH) : 91 Points (2017)
A discreet but quite pretty nose grudgingly offers up notes of red raspberry, plum and violet nuances. The delicious, round and appealingly textured medium weight flavors possess a relatively sophisticated palate impression thanks primarily to the fine-grained tannins that also shape the moderately firm, dusty and balanced finale. This has the stuff to reward mid-term cellaring and is a wine that will need at least a few years. *Outstanding* (10/2019)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 90 Points (2017)
This wine’s clean lines shepherd translucent red-berry fruit toward darker tart cherry-skin flavors. It gains floral notes as it opens with air, a lush and gentle pinot for seared duck breast.
