As is so often the case the poor soils and high slate content of the Sonnenuhr vineyard are immediately on show on the cool, slatey, reserved nose.

The palate too is intensely focussed and pure with cool blue slate to the fore followed by lemons, white peach, mirabelle, white flowers and dry stones. Such purity and elegance– a dancing, light as feather Spätlese that effortlessly delivers intense flavours of great precision. Knock out.

Manfred is certainly one of the world's more eccentric wine producers and a tasting in his drawing room with him is always enjoyable and entertaining. In the Sonnenuhr of Wehlen he owns a portion of one of the Mittel Mosel's top vineyards. Its steep south-facing dark slate slopes tend to result in deeply flavoured, mineral yet rich and smoky wines. This Spatlese beams you up to Cloud 9, from where you have a wonderful view over the beautiful Mosel Valley. In spite of the considerable concentration, this is super-delicate and precise on the barely medium-bodied palate. Enormously long finish, where you barely feel the natural grape sweetness. The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is pure, clear and flinty on the concentrated nose that is reminiscent of a fresh fruit salad served on a slate plate on an early summer morning. Light, lush and highly finessed but seriously structured on the palate, this is a savory, very clear and elegant Sonnenuhr Spätlese with great precision and finesse and highly stimulating salinity and mouth-watering grip on the finish. Headily sweet scents of gardenia, lily and honeysuckle mingle with those of fresh apple and pear, setting the tone for a succulently fruity, delicate palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. With an enveloping sense of richness, the finish lingers lusciously, almost decadently. Revealing a hint of green in its color, the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is rocking stuff that delivers mouthwatering notes of sweet peach, sugared citrus, and mint in a medium-bodied, off-dry, balanced style. It’s one of the more fruit forward efforts here yet stays vibrant, clean, and balanced.
