This is a wine of incredible purity, so much so that it comes across as less immediately characterful than the Graacher Himmelreich, though texturally more refined, silky, sleek and graceful.

Delicate floral notes, grey slate, sweet pure yellow fruits – this is incredibly charming and sunny as it flutters and dances its way across the palate, while also surprisingly intense. A wine for purists. Just beautiful.

Manfred is certainly one of the world's more eccentric wine producers and a tasting in his drawing room with him is always enjoyable and entertaining. In the Sonnenuhr of Wehlen he owns a portion of one of the Mittel Mosel's top vineyards. Its steep south-facing dark slate slopes tend to result in deeply flavoured, mineral yet rich and smoky wines. In addition, he manipulates some plots in the next door Himmelreich of Graacher which produces engaging wines with fresh acidities that are… Read more

Robert Parker (RP) : 98 Points (2020)
The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is intense and complex on the still introverted but complex nose that shows clear, bright fruit aromas (baby pineapple) intermingled with fine, flinty slate notes. What an aristocratic appearance! Round, crystalline and saline on the palate, this 2020 Auslese is much more openhearted and fruity as well as frisky and frivolous than it pretends to be on the nose. This is a really Catholic Riesling or a picture-book Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese. Its finish, however, is Protestant: rigorously linear, straight and with serious structure and grip.

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2020)
Although this is still very young, it shows fabulous aromatic complexity, the summer-flower, peach, apricot and passion-fruit aromas of breathtaking beauty. Very concentrated and super-filigree, the considerable ripeness beautifully balanced by mineral acidity that provides enormous vitality at the enormously detailed finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2020)
Fresh as a daisy on the nose; positively bounds out of the glass. Round, ample fruit easily trumps any SO2. Delicate yet with considerable honeyed fruit. Spreads all the way across the palate, which suggests a particularly bright future for this wine. 17.5/20 points (JS) (9/2021)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2017)
Whiffs of smoke and crushed earth blow off quickly with aeration to reveal succulent white-peach, yellow-cherry and grapefruit tones. It’s unabashedly fresh and forward in fruit, yet anchored by a core of stony mineral tones and zippy light-saber acidity. It’s a hedonistic yet impeccably balanced wine that drinks well already but will improve well through 2035, and likely beyond. (AI) (3/2019)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2016)
Another brilliant value is the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, a dessert-styled effort that has a monster bouquet of sugared lime, mint, and citrus, with a sweet grapefruit-like note developing with time in the glass. Possessing balancing minerality and acidity, beautiful purity, and a layered, incredibly impressive texture, it’s another gem of a wine to seek out.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2016)
Pure, flying like a butterfly across the palate, this starts with mineral and floral notes up front, but unfolds to show multiple layers of flavor, remaining seductive throughout. The peach, glazed pear and honey flavors are perfectly balanced, with power and force seemingly reserved. Shows wonderful expression. Drink now through 2037. 300 cases made.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2016)
Heady scents of honeysuckle and heliotrope vie for attention with ripe pear and quince. The creamy palate is enveloping and loaded with inner-mouth perfume; hints of mint, sage and pink grapefruit lend cooling and exotic allure. (I know it will strike some people as sacrilege to suggest this, but imagine that a bit of Scheurebe has been blended in.) This finishes with luscious intensity, if for now not the striking transparency of the corresponding Graacher Himmelreich. (DS) (1/2018)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2013)
Like the Gold Cap bottling from this vineyard, this glows with ripe, golden fruit, generous and satin-textured. It feels fresh, the flavors lasting with clarity, delicious now but worthy of another two decades in the cellar.
